1. Xu was never a jaeger pilot; she could never find someone she was comfortable and compatible drifting with. 

2. She graduated from medical school at 25. 

3. Her specialty was kaiju nerve systems. 

4. She is one of a handful of people stupid enough to taste kaiju blue and live to tell the tale. 

5. She and Vayne have been set up on blind dates before by completely unrelated circles of friends and they both find it hilarious because it keeps happening.

His brow is dark, lips pressed together as though they are parchments declaring the end is near, and, twitching along the edge of his jaw is a muscle. In his hand is the phone. He speaks with calm despite these signs. "Have I yet discovered the telltale spark that decrees it is broken?" The 'again' hangs heavy in the background.

She takes the phone from him (the fifteenth phone, if she’s remembering the count correctly), and presses the power button. 

It turns on, at least. That’s something. But then the error messages flash up on the screen, over and over and over again. 

“Dammit, Vayne,” she sighs, and pries open the phone, removes the chip that contains all the contacts he’s programmed in, and crosses her vast office in the manor to an elaborate oaken cabinet. 

Inside, are twelve other boxes, sleek identical smartphones with hard cases and shatterproof screen coverings. She opens one, slips the card in its place, and hands him the new device. 

“Here.”
