Fraternal Benefit Societies... what are they?
Fraternal Benefit Societies, or Fraternals, are non-profit membership organizations that have a representative form of operating, primarily organized through a lodge system. Lodges within towns or cities can carry out social, intellectual, educational, charitable, and patriotic purposes - as well as others. Fraternals provide members with life insurance and other financial protection benefits in accordance with state law. The earnings are used to fund member-supported community activities.
