New Projects!
Hey all! I guess this is my first “real” post on here, and it’ll probably be a bit of a long one. Out of the many things that I do, the main one is that I’m a Software Engineer; I’m currently going through college to get my Bachelor’s degree. One of the things I’ve been running into is that I get way too many ideas for projects and then never finish any of them, which has led to both a very full but underwhelming list of GitHub repositories (https://github.com/adamukaapan) and not many projects to refer to in interviews and resumes. I decided I should finally remedy this as I’m coming into the time that I need to start looking for internships and jobs ‘n stuff. One of the other things I’ve been noticing is that I love experimenting with new (well, “new” to me specifically) technologies. So what I’ve decided to do is choose one project, using some things that I haven’t worked with before, and force myself to finish it to at least a minimally complete state. The project I settled on in the end is an Android Tumblr slideshow/image viewer app, for a couple reasons. First, it’s an almost entirely new area to me: I’ve never worked with app development past the bare minimum, and I’ve never worked with web APIs. Second, there’s a surprisingly little amount of apps that have this functionality in the Play store, so I figured if I did decide to publish it this is a decent niche to work in. Third, it’s a somewhat but not overly complex app: it encompasses some somewhat advanced features of app development and has some organizational complexity, but it isn’t on an unmanageable scale.
The other thing I’m hoping to do with this project is to start a bit of a developer blog here, so I’m hoping to post semi-regular updates on my progress as I go chronicling all the stupid mistakes I make, all the cool little things I learn, all the weird quirks I discover, and just generally how the project evolves over time as I go through it. So look forward to more posts in the future (one of which should be coming very soon)!
(Fair warning, these posts will probably be fairly heavy on the geek-speak, it’s more intended for fellow developers than for entertainment. I will be trying to keep it at least somewhat on the more beginner side though, so that others like me can learn from what I’m doing and maybe gain something from it for their own projects.)
