2015, thanks, man.

I have a confession to make. I’ve been waiting all year to write this blog post. Well, at least I’ve been waiting since I realized that enough interesting things have happened for us as a band to warrant the excitement of being able to review and list everything that has felt notable enough for others to maybe come across a thought of “Man, these guys have had a great year.”.

And now that my coffee has cooled down enough for some gentle sippin’, let’s just dive head first into our summary of 2015.

We went through a lot this year. We went through a whole lot more than we thought we would. We didn’t know exactly where we were going, what we were going to do, where we were going to play, or who we were going to meet in the process. At the beginning of 2015, we had released our music video for Marina (which turned out….okay) and we were still trying to make Live Free And Die ourselves. The whole year was still ahead of us, and we didn’t really have much of a goal in mind. There were a few major milestones that would end up making up the most of our 2015.

The first major milestone would be The House of Blues. More specifically the time that we got to perform at the legendary venue. On the main stage nonetheless. We were selected out of some large number of artists to do a performance showcase thing for some fancy-shmancy music industry people. There was a free taco bar involved, it was pretty sweet. But nothing was cooler than playing a show, looking behind you to see the big ol “House Of Blues” logo on the giant backdrop curtain, and then to turn around and look at 400 dancing and moshing friends and strangers. That night definitely set a tone of motivational energy to the rest of the year.

The second milestone was probably the moment when we were mixing the first draft of Live Free And Die in James’s basement. We had been in this room, same seats, same session for like 3 full weeks now. We kind of just looked at each other and realized that everything was shit. So we re-recorded the entire EP, but with someone who knew what they were doing and it turned out pretty freakin sweet. Who would have thought that to get the desired results of something, you can’t really half-ass it? It was a whole lot of work but it was worth it. Although it did lead to the unfortunate third milestone.

The unfortunate third milestone (Think of it more as an important thing to have happened, milestone sounds a little too happy) of the year was parting ways with our friend James Cryan from the band. We had shared the stage with him many times, had many amazing hangs, sleepless nights, gaming sessions, and we watched the Foo Fighters documentary Back and Forth with him nearly 12 times. But sometimes you have to really think about what is best for everyone in the scenario, and that decision might be a really shitty decision that someone has to make. Luckily, I can say with confidence that things are much better between us all in the current day than how awful everything was between us back in June.

The fourth milestone is probably my favorite though, when we were graced by the presence of Sean Millane Jr. Our new bass player, but honestly he is much more than just that. He is one of our best friends. In the last few months of 2015 he has blown us away with his dedication, energy, and motivation. He’s kind of a yes man. Rarely ever in a negative mood, and he can jump kick with a bass rivalled only by Mark Hoppus. He brought new life into the band when we needed it most, when our steam was running out and we were losing our edge. Thank you Sean.

Those are the 4 major milestones that I believe made the year so impactful for us. But we also played more shows than we ever had before. We played shows in New Hampshire, New York City, Boston, smaller towns of Massachusetts that are hard to spell/pronounce. We played a show in a bowling alley in exchange for free bowling, we got paid for some gigs. I even found a dollar on the floor of a venue and used it to buy a McChicken because it was all the money I had at that point. (And they say music doesn’t pay.)

We played a show at The Space for 2 people. We had waited to play after like 6 or 7 bands, one band had dropped out, and we waited until 10 PM to play for two people. Little did we know, the next time we would play that venue we would be playing for 200+ people opening for Frank Iero and the Cellebration. A show in which we met some amazing people, and some of those folks have gone out of their way to see us again. Some of them even got us tiny holiday gifts. We ended the year with a show where almost everyone was dancing and knew the words to all of our songs. Our gear even survived many trashings at the ends of our sets, which we are very thankful for.

Now I’ve been thinking of what topics to write about to make it very obvious what kind of year 2015 had been for us. And as you can see, its been a very busy and good one. But as I logged onto Facebook this morning, one friend’s status update kind of put it all into perspective and made me realize what really matters with all that we have done.

(Yes, I liked the heck out of that when I read it, no shame)

Music is fun, we have fun making it and it’s all we really know. But seeing something like this really makes you think of the impact music has on others. And it is weird thinking that we are making music that people are resonating with on a personal level, to help get them through the day.

2015 has been a great year, but its time to move onto 2016. We are almost finished writing our new album. We are going to being demos very shortly. We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on.
