@cubeswhump She did, but not as badly as you might suspect! Nyla’s migraines were basically the ONLY thing Bethany was ever more-or-less “forgiving” about. She’d grown up friends with someone who’d gotten TERRIBLE migraines from a very young age, and it’s one of the only things Bethany can actually feel, like, human empathy for. Obviously Nyla hates them in their entirety, but when she was in the middle of a migraine it was just about the only time Bethany acted kindly towards her.

That, and this is set EARLY in the slaves’ narrative. Bethany didn’t start out as bad as she ended, it was something where she got slowly worse over a long period of time, but by the end she was the damnable monster the readership is familiar with. When Nyla was 15, it was still only her and Greyson living with Bethany, and she was awful, but not like, heinous just yet. Greyson knew a kinder version of Bethany than Nyla knew, than Sasha knew, than Evan knew, and Lilah effectively only knew her at her worst.

About to introduce a collab character. Girl, early twenties. Kind if triangular face with broad forehead and pointed chin. Blue eyes, roman nose. Naturally blonde with very light and hard to see eyebrows but her hair is dyed black. Long, choppy hair and very short, kind of curved bangs/fringe. Big earrings. -cubeswhump

Are supernatural phenomena more accepted in the GW universe or is Galo just a superstitious person? My initial thought was that Greyson was hallucinating from grief and exhaustion but then Galo freaked. To be honest I'd probably freak too in his place, I'm a super paranoid person. I'm nineteen and check my room for murderers before bed. - cubeswhump

Supernatural phenomena is pretty much exactly the same as it is irl. The fact that I was giving narrative weight to the existence of supernatural shit was something I heavily debated with myself, but ultimately was the path I liked best and ended up taking.

While Greyson WAS hallucinating from grief and exhaustion, Galo’s first response would not be (and wasn’t) to doubt what he was told. Greyson said “there’s ghosts” and Galo went “well alright I’m gonna take that seriously.” One of my brainworms that I’ve had for like, a year now and finally manifested in this chapter was “someone has a psychotic break and sees supernatural shit and their loved ones take them seriously,” and I mean the characters are pretty much perfect for it.

Like, is there a ghost? Maybe! Who knows! Not Galo! But Greyson says there was and Galo would much rather listen to and address Greyson’s experiences and fears directly than brush Greyson off and tell him he’s acting crazy. It isn’t that Galo is paranoid as much as he is very unwilling to tamper with the unknowable or leave freaky shit to simmer like some chump in a horror flick.

Does Nyla ever think about what life would be like if she were free? -cubeswhump

Very rarely. Her "if I were free" fantasies are sorta like my "if I were a millionaire" fantasies, yknow? Outlandish, impossible, and never gonna happen. She's aware that she's a slave and that's all she'll ever be and in a large way doesn't really want to be free--she's been this way all her life. It's hard for her to conceptualize the idea as anything other than wild fantasy.

Okay so usually erotic stuff freaks me out but you said cannibalism/inhuman whumper and IDEAS FLOWING. In addition to sharp teeth to tear, consider: cats, big and small, even our regular housecats, have rough tongues that help tear flesh away.
