i HATED the alchemist. so very much. for all of these reasons too
I just...there were occasionally nice and interesting lines, but really it was just a story about a boy pursuing treasure and a lot of talk about "men" and their "destinies"...perhaps I would've liked it more if it seemed like "men" weren't the only ones with destinies and women were meant to wait for them to return from their quests. Lol, no, boo boo. I'm out handling my own business and achieving my own goals in half the time it's gonna take some dude who's following the wind and sand or whatever.
I felt really othered during the book because it felt really clear that the author didn't write that book for me to read and that nothing inside it was meant to resonate with me. If I had been forced to read it in college or something, I probably would've hated it. But because I got to choose it and could've put it down at any time (I considered it quite a few times, but it was short and the weekend is long, so whatevs), it was just mildly annoying.
