Did we really survive j-school? 🎓✨🥂🍾 #cunyj17 #cunyjschool (at The TimesCenter)
I took this photo somewhere over North Africa on my way to Monrovia in June. ✈️✈️✈️I was nervous but excited for summer in Monrovia and had no clue what to expect. Now I'm reversing that trip and can't believe how quickly time flew. Sorry about the old photo! I wasn't as lucky with my seat's view this time... #reportersnotebook #cunyj17 #intransit #brusselsairlines #monrovia #airplaneviews #summerinternship #frontpageafrica (at Ben Gurion Airport)
During my first week in Liberia I went to the Ducor Hotel and looked out on Westpoint, Liberia's most densely populated slum. This week I had the opportunity to visit Westpoint with Musa, a Liberian who grew up in there and who still lives there with his family. This photo is the opposite view shot from the waterside in Westpoint looking back at the Ducor Hotel. Westpoint is home to more than 75,000 people and is built on a beach. The sandy peninsula is rapidly eroding leaving families homeless. Latrines (pictured here) are few and far between. All of this right in downtown Monrovia. Musa, my guide for the afternoon, wants to help his community and thinks education is the key. With the help of some friends he launched Educate West Point, a nonprofit that works to make sure kids stay in school by making sure they don't have to worry about school fees, uniforms, food, or poor health. I leave Liberia tomorrow so I won't be around to see the first batch of kids start school in September but I look forward to hearing how it goes. #reportersnotebook #cunyj17 #cunyjreports #westpoint #educatewestpoint #education #urbaneducation #liberia #communitydevelopment (at Westpoint, Montserrado, Liberia)
Yesterday I did my last interview for an education story that I've been working on since the beginning of July. This is a photo of one of the classrooms at the school in Tahn, the school my story focuses on. It is the only school that goes through high school in its district and like many schools in Liberia, they lack desk, chairs, and other basic supplies // July 2017 // Tahn, Liberia // #ruraleducation #grandcapemountcounty #golakonnehdistrict #liberia #photojournalism #reportingtrip #reportersnotebook #reportagephotography #reportage #womenphotograph #cunyjreports #cunyj17 (at Tahn, Grand Cape Mount, Liberia)

A young boy sits through Sunday school in a church in Tahn 🙏🏿 Tahn is a predominantly Muslim town. When the church's founder Pastor Varney approached the elders back in the 70's about starting a church, they told him he could do it only if he started a school as well. Today the school has around 500 students and is the only high school in the Gola Konneh District of Grand Cape Mount County.
