Another day at Cuppas, the consuming conversations workshop. Today was a largely experimental day. I decided to begin looking towards the idea of creating a monster under the bed character, so I played around with classic cartoon images of bats with clay.
I also attempted to create a fang (with several fangs on the inside, a really interesting suggestion made by Marianne @k00327904 ).
Honestly I struggled quite a bit with both of these sculptures, clay is still a really challenging medium for me, but I do feel as though I learned how to slip and score really effectively. My overall forms and techniques need some work though!
Even though this workshop has probably been the most difficult for me so far, I am enjoying the learning curve and it's been really interesting to try a medium that's completely out of my comfort zone.

Lost a bet with my youngest boy so I have to post a real photo of me on Insta and Tumblr.

My second day at Cuppas, the consuming conversations workshop! Today in the morning I focused on experimenting with different building techniques and creating texture in the clay.
I tried different methods of joining pieces of clay, like on the finger and I played around with recreating different primary sources.
I used a scoring tool to try and make scales, and this is a texture I may use if I decide to create a monster under the bed character. I tried gouging out different amounts of clay for different textures.
In the evening, I was lucky enough to try using the pottery wheel for the first time! It was a challenging activity that definitely takes a lot of practice to master, but I had a really good time trying to get the hang of it. I managed to create a pot with the help of Elaine, and I hope to practice this skill in the future.
This week I'm doing Cuppas, the consuming conversations workshop.
This workshop has definitely been a challenge for me so far! I haven't worked with clay for a few years and I found it fairly difficult, especially when I was rolling a sheet flat to make into a cup.
The sheet had an uneven thickness and the edges were too thin, and as a result my cup turned out a little wonky, but I learned how important it is to take the time to roll out the clay properly.
In the end I was really happy with how my cup turned out and I really enjoyed the process of engraving cobwebs and letters into the cup. I can't wait to continue the workshop this week.
Cuddles, cuppas and chemistry: Albanese and Luxon downplay divisions in times of global turmoil
The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and his New Zealand counterpart, Christopher Luxon, made multiple references to the freezing Queenstown climate during their annual meet-up but the mood was far from frosty. As the evening light dipped behind the jagged peaks surrounding a billionaire’s bunker-like facility where the leaders held their bilateral talks at the weekend, Luxon quipped…
