John pored over the crosswords page of the newspaper. He was still working on the simplest one. Before writing down his answer, he checked with his companion. “So...” he started softly, “The opening words of Herman Melville’s 1851 novel ‘Moby Dick’, with four-two-seven words...it’s ‘Call me Ishmael’, right? How do you spell Ishmael? I-S-H-M-E...?”

     “here,” maggie slid an oversized shot glass full of striaght absinthe infront of the patron, the strong black licorice smell filling the air between them. “absinthe is the drink of the divine, did you know? looks like you might need it.”

     “wouldn’t it be nice if we were older ...” rozaline was immersed in her sketch, completely oblivious to the person approaching her. as she went to brush her hair out of her eyes, charocoal stained hands leaving smudges on her cheek, she yelped in surprise, “then we wouldn’t have to wait so  --  JESUS!” she laughed, “you scared me!”

humming birds always eluded her. too fast. the feeling she felt trying to sketch a humming bird must have been how people felt when she talked. but she was quiet, soft in this moment, watching the bird, how it moved, the way it’s wings fluttered. knees curled up to her chest she tried to sketch the outline of the bird before it could dash off. that was until she heard a crunch and the bird flew off. she sighed. “till next time.”

“why yes, i am, in fact, that guy.” he didn’t really hear what the other was saying -- in fact, nothing occupied his mind more than the food right in front of him. and in all honesty, lincoln knew for a solid fact (after many embarrassing moments) that not everyone was well aware of the legends in the racing world (even if everyone should know so). putting on the most “charming” smile he could, he leaned back on his chair and shrugged his shoulders. “well actually -- depends on what you want but i am definitely... the guy to talk to... unless you know me from somewhere.” he coughed the last part to himself.

tucker stared down the animal, hands out and a little annoyed. “i don’t know why you’re tryin’ to run away. cause it’s nice there, you get food, baths, i read you stories. but the one moment someone leaves the gate open....” shaking his head. looking up to see a figure and tucker raised his hand slightly. “don’t scare her.” the pig oinked and tucker rolled his eyes. “no. don’t get an attitude with me. you’re going back home to your family, no stop these games, you’re blocking people. and there will be no apples for you tonight if you keep this up.” the pig finally plopped down and tucker sighed. “sorry, her.” he called out.

THE HEAT FELT COMFORTABLE ON HER BARE SKIN as she leaned back on her arms, feeling the grass tickle between her fingertips. it hadn’t been this warm in what felt like years – the cold still wedged deep into her bones and the naked sensation she felt of not wearing layers upon layers of clothing. the warmth of the sun was a distant yet welcome feeling, closing her eyes only to see orange through her thin lids. the next time she opened her eyes was to look for her bottle of water, laying somewhere near her until her gaze crossed another’s. still adjusting her eyes, meg’s brows furrowed in both curiosity and mild irritation as she called out – “take a picture, why don’t you? i charge by the shot.”

James surveyed the crowed. It was an eclectic group, to be sure, but if weren’t so single-minded in his mission he’d still have felt out of place. He was, as they said, too old for this shit. But when he’d gotten a drunken text from one of his bartenders about why Rose was at this party and he wasn’t, James had the sudden urge to gatecrash. 

“Oi,” James said, putting his good hand on the shoulder of an innocent passerby. “Have you seen a girl named Rose?”
