Harry begins serving the food, and Tom braces himself for the pleasant table talk, that, on any other day, would have been the highlight of his week. He hopes Harry does not ask him for details - he doesn’t have it in himself to lie to the younger man, and he doesn’t want to expound him with the details of his… ahem, evening.
“Did you get around to asking Slughorn for that project?”
“…project?” Tom almost gets a whiplash from his neck snapping up to look at Harry. The latter is busy trying to spear a mushroom with his fork, but warm green eyes glance up to meet his for a second.
“The one you were whining about for weeks? Gods, Tom, please don’t tell me you forgot. I can NOT take another month of you complaining about how boring your work is, I will throw out your laptop I do!”
“I do not whine,” Tom says with furrowed brows. The topic of the conversation has thrown him off, but he has more important things to worry about - mainly, defending his honour and good name. “You really shouldn’t spread such lies. Besides, everyone knows I’m capable of far more than what Slughorn has me working on! Exoplanet formations, honestly. I researched on those in sophomore year.”
Harry laughs. “Only you, Tom.”
Tom sniffs. “And I did ask Slughorn to put me in the black hole research team. He said it’ll be done by next week.”
“That’s great news!”
Tom doesn’t pay attention to much after that. Honestly, supernovas and galaxies have nothing on the brightness of the smile that is Harry Potter’s.
She put the spoon of honey he poured her in her mouth; the sweetness of the honey coated her sore throat like a blanket. She gave him the spoon and he filled it up again, handing it to her to eat once more. The corners of her mouth curled up into a smile as the honey dripped on her tastebuds. He laughed softly.
'What?' she taunted, 'Do I eat honey in a weird way?'
He shook his head, 'No, not at all. You just confirmed my theory.' She raised an eyebrow as he continued, 'Every time you eat something sweet, the ends of your mouth curl into a cute smile that I've never seen before, until you eat something sweet.' He shook his head and smiled, 'It's one of my favorite things about you.'
