happy holidays @cutepiglet! i was your secret santa for the @iwatobies gift exchange! have some reigisa winter fluff (+ pre-established relationship!) i’m sorry that it’s a bit late but i hope you like it!
“C’mon Haru, open up!” Nagisa frowned and pounded on the bathroom door once again, to no avail. He could hear tiny splashes of water dripping onto the tile floor within, but still no comment from Haru. Beside him, Rei sighed.
“Haruka-senpai, it really is beautiful outside….” he cast a glance at Nagisa, whose previously cheerful face had formed a pout.
“He’s like this every winter. Most of the time I get him to come out but he’s so stubborn! Haru!”
Rei plugged his ears, even though Nagisa’s yell had already about burst his eardrums; he nearly yelled back, which certainly would not have progressed the situation any further, when Iwatobi’s guardian angel appeared to save the day, as he always did.
“Why don’t you just leave him alone for now?” Makoto said, smiling in his kind but perpetually exasperated manner. “You know how depressed he gets when we get lots of snow, when he can’t swim…”
“How are we supposed to do club activities if we don’t have all of the club together!” Nagisa threw his gloved hands in the air, but Makoto’s calming presence had already taken its effect on him; his previous annoyance had faded.
“I’ll make some mackerel, that’ll lure him out,” Makoto suggested. “Besides, it might be a good thing if he doesn’t come out this year… if you remember what happened two years ago…”
The three of them lapsed into silence. Rei gave it the appropriate number of minutes for reminiscence before asking, “What happened?”
“Well, Haru will swim anywhere-”
“One of Haru’s neighbors have a koi pond-”
Both Nagisa and Makoto paused after talking over each other, but enough had already been said. Still, Nagisa made an attempt at elaboration.
“We spent a night in the emergency room, but Haru-chan bounces back from anything.” Nagisa finally said. “But we had to pay for the broken fence, so…”
Rei nodded sagely. “Makoto-senpai’s probably right.”
Their senpai nodded, smiling once again. “Still- you two should go on and play in the snow. It’s not often that Iwatobi gets this much.” He wasn’t even dressed for the cold weather, although his green jacket and scarf were piled up in Haru’s kitchen, along with the latter’s discarded winter clothes. Rei and Nagisa, on the other hand, were bundled up to their ears in winter jackets, gloves, scarves, and boots, and having stood outside of Haru’s bathroom door for so long, were beginning to sweat from the heat of the indoors.
Rei could also tell that Nagisa was ready to burst waiting around, so he nodded and gestured to the door. “We’ll be off, then.”
“Of course,” Makoto replied. “Don’t worry about me and Haru-- we’ll join you in a bit!” only to add under his breath, “...but Rin better show up soon… I hope Sousuke didn’t get them lost again.”
“Nagisa, did you forget your earmuffs?” Rei called out of the open door, turning to close it so that all of the heat of the house didn’t escape. “The chances of getting a cold in the winter time spike exponentially, so--”
“Gotcha!” called Nagisa, as a snowball exploded right on the back of Rei’s neck.
“I’ve barely taken two steps out of the door!” Rei exclaimed with indignation, feeling the freezing wetness of the snow trickle down his neck, his scarf having proved useless against Nagisa’s snowballs. He craned his neck, searching for his assailant, but there was no sign of Nagisa, only white as far as the eye could see. It piled up on the edges of the streets and roofs of houses, falling in soft drifts big enough to catch on his tongue. Despite this, the sun shone weakly in the sky, the only modicum of warmth in a frozen world.
Tentatively, Rei took a step forward. There was no snowball to the face, only the crunching of snow beneath his boots. In fact, the whole world was completely quiet-- there was no sound of Makoto and Haru within the house, or the neighbors around them, or even Nagisa, wherever he was hidden. It was a beautiful sight-- the most beautiful he had seen all day. As he took in his surroundings, Rei exhaled a frosty breath.
And then was promptly hit with another snowball.
Thankfully, this time it had caught him on his side, and with the element of surprise lost, he was able to pinpoint a flash of blond curls before they ducked behind a bush only a few paces away, a hiding spot he had yet to notice. Even without that, however, he could hear a few breathless giggles, which was all that he needed to formulate a strategy.
If Nagisa thought he could get away with lobbing snowballs with no rhyme or reason behind it, he was sorely mistaken. Rei was no unwitting opponent-- he had studied all of the theories of warfare, a true disciple of Sun Tzu, and even though this was a rather small-scale battlefield compared to what he had read about, the same principles should apply. If Nagisa wanted a war, he was going to get one.
Stooping down to collect a handful of snow, Rei watched the bush for any sign of movement before turning in the opposite direction and breaking into a full out run. He could hear the spatters of snowballs behind him, but he hadn’t been on the track team for nothing, and within a few moments he had outrun Nagisa’s view and was circling around Haru’s house.
Time was of the essence before Nagisa figured out his plan. Pushing up his glasses to boost his determination, Rei gathered a few armfuls of snow before completing his loop around Haru’s house (passing a steam-filled window that was no doubt the bathroom) before bursting onto the other side, where his victim lay.
Thankfully, Nagisa was blissfully unaware of his plan, and was still peering over the top of the bush in confusion, probably wondering where Rei had gone. It was in this moment (with great satisfaction) that Rei dumped his entire armful of snow over him.
“Rei-chaaaaan!” Nagisa cried, flailing widely as he tried to find his attacker. Spitting snow into the ground, he shook out his hair like a puppy, snow flying every which way. “Where were you? You just started running, I had no idea what you were doing!”
“Well, Nagisa,” Rei began triumphantly, “It was simple diversion tactics, I made way around the house so that I could surprise you and--”
“Never let your guard down!” Nagisa shouted, interrupting Rei midsentence and talking him. Before he could even get another word out, Nagisa stuffed snow into his mouth, cheering loudly, to the extent that the neighbors were probably going to make a complaint in a few minutes.
They rolled around in the snow for a few minutes, Nagisa trying to force more snow into Rei’s mouth and even attempting to pull his clothes up and stick it up his shirt before Rei managed to push him back, sputtering and choking on snow all the while. Finally, they both receded, breathless and flushed despite the biting air.
Rei was laying flat on his back, in the perfect position for snow angels with snow up to his ears. Nagisa was straddling him about the waist, still going on and on about his victory:
“And you should’ve seen your face, you looked so shocked, I totally got you, talking about your tactics and theories or whatever, it was-- Rei-chan? Are you listening?”
The answer to that was a solid no, but Rei couldn’t formulate actual sentences, because he was too busy staring-- staring at Nagisa, framed by the blue sky, with a lump of snow in each hand and large quantities of it threading his eyelashes and eyebrows, dripping off of his hair, or streaking on the front of his jacket. Flushed, breathless, and staring at him with a completely bewildered expression… Rei decided that he had seen the most beautiful sight he’d seen all day for the second time.
Realizing that Nagisa was still staring at him, Rei shook his head, adjusting his glasses, which had begun to steam up long ago. In fact, it was a wonder he could even see clearly anymore, as wondrous as the fact that Nagisa hadn’t smashed his glasses to bits when they’d engaged in their snowy warfare. “It’s nothing,” he began, beginning to push himself from the ground.
“We should probably go and see how Makoto-senpai and Haruka-senpai are doing…?” Rei trailed off. Nagisa was making a strange expression, one he couldn’t quite interpret-- and then he was pushing Rei back into the snow--
And the Nagisa kissed him.
It was only a quick peck, chapped lips brushing against each other, and so quick and cold it felt like nothing more than a snowflake brushing his lips. But it had happened, because Rei’s face was red enough to melt the snow on his face, and Nagisa had adopted a look of momentary shyness that only ever developed when they did something like this.
They had been dating for a couple months now, not too long, and had made their way through awkward hand-holding, an awkward first kiss, and awkward “dates”. Nagisa, for his part, had seemed to enjoy himself no matter how awkward they were, although Rei was still trying to puzzle out the idea of “dating”. What was the equation or formula for a perfect date; how could he apply his theories of beauty to his aspect of his life? The best moments were the ones that were completely lost, like rolling around in the snow with no awareness of anything happening around them….
“Rei-chan?” Any shyness Nagisa had been experiencing was gone, as he leaned over to go almost nose to nose with Rei; despite the fact that Nagisa was still on top of him and his ears and cheeks were quickly succumbing to frostbite, all traces of awkwardness Rei had felt were mysteriously gone.
“Yes, Nagisa?”
“Did you like that?”
“The element of surprise is very useful.”
Nagisa smiled mischievously. “Too bad it’s gone now.” He cupped Rei’s face, leaning in with all of his former quickness gone. Droplets of snow fell onto Rei’s cheeks, Nagisa’s hair brushing his forehead gently; so caught up in the moment, he couldn’t even complain about the fact that they were probably going to get pneumonia what with their gloves and jackets soaked through. Instead, he merely tilted up his chin and waited.
“OI!”
The element of surprise, while useful in some situation, was also apparently lethal. At the sound of Rin’s voice shattering the silence of their snowy world, Rei lurched forward, knocking his forehead into Nagisa’s and causing them both to fall back into the snow, clutching their heads and seeing stars. Rei recovered quicker, sitting up behind a moaning Nagisa and searching for Rin and his unwelcome intrusion.
Thankfully, they were hidden from view by the bush. From his vantage point, Rei could barely see Rin, bundled from head to toe, walking up to Haru’s door and giving it a sharp knock. Behind him, easy to spot because of his massive height, was Sousuke, with Momo and Nitori in tow (the latter looking, as always, like he had been dragged there against his will).
“Haru? Makoto? Don’t tell me they’re all still inside…” Rin sighed, before pounding the door again.
Beside Rei, Nagisa got up from the snow, finally recovered from their collision. He shook his head with vigor.
“I’m going to go tackle him,”
“Nagisa,” Rei sighed, speaking in a whisper as if they still needed to conceal their position. “Haven’t you had enough of the element of surprise today?”
“Never!” Nagisa replied, and just like that, kissed him again-- but it was a real kiss this time. Rei leaned into him for a moment, savoring the warmth, before Nagisa pulled away, smiling brightly.
“I’ll be right back!” he said, before bursting from behind their bush in a flurries, running full charge at Rin and kicking snow in his wake.
“...that wasn’t even a surprise,” Rei muttered, as he watched Nagisa tackle Rin into the snow, but he couldn’t stop a smile from forming.
Later, as everybody would sit around Haru’s kotatsu eating mackerel and watching the snow fall, Rei would reconsider his favorite seasons. Winter had its merits and flaws, he considered; but holding hands under the kotatsu, snowfall, and his birthday all made it very appealing. Although there was no swimming in winter, or the normal kind at least, so the other seasons edged out ahead slightly; but ultimately it didn’t really matter. In any season he had Nagisa, and they had each other, and that was more than enough.
