it was well past that time of night when serenity’s lights had dimmed and most of her crew had settled in their bunks. and if it weren’t for the tricky route they were taking to new kasmir, wash would be joining them. a downright wistful thought of his wife asleep in their bed flitted through his brain. but he had pilot-y type things to attend to instead -- things course checks and the careful monitoring of fuel levels. and there were some stretches of this route he didn’t trust to leave to autopilot.
truth be told, though, he liked nights like this. missed off-duty opportunities with zoe aside, he liked the calm of it -- just him, the ship, and the black. this was the view that kept him going, that made him itchy and impatient if he stayed too long dirt side.
but when the companion appeared in the doorway, he offered a welcoming smile. on long hauls like this, the crew would keep him company sometimes -- filtering in and out between their own duties. oh, he didn’t mind being on his own, but he was usually grateful for a change in conversation all the same...
