Anna Alt - BFA Emphasis in Drawing
Sophomore BFA Emphasis in Drawing
Can you describe the type of art you make?
My art ranges from wholesome doodles and cute nonsense to realistic portrayals of nature, but I like doing the doodles more.I like the happy reactions they cause when people see them, and I don't really need to worry about them being perfect.
You used to be an animation major, has that background affected/influenced your art making in any way?
My freshman year, I was an animation major, and that really stressed me out. Doing sixty drawings per week was draining, and the toxic feedback I got from my peers left me feeling defeated and unsatisfied. Transferring to the art program halfway through that year was the only thing that kept me from dropping out of college. Animation definitely had an impact on my mentality about how I do art. I now value taking my time on one drawing, instead of rushing through a bunch to meet a deadline. I pay more attention to detail, and I try to take it easy and stress less. To me, I get a lot more satisfaction from doing one good drawing now, than sixty mediocre ones. I'm also a LOT happier with the feedback and support I get from my peers in the art building.
What are some of the things that influence your art making?
My art influence comes from my environment, the people around me that I learn from, the cartoons that I love (Over the Garden Wall and Adventure Time), and some of the artists I follow on Instagram. I also am influenced by the general feeling of happiness- I like to try to capture it and keep that feeling with me to spread to my pals. It's always nice to make people smile.
What has been a project/piece that you've made that you're really proud of?
I have one piece of art that I am very proud of that I did in design concepts last spring. I painted on an antique poster of the Three Graces and gave the ladies depicted in it some designer clothes. It sounds kinda stupid writing it out, but I'm very proud of it. I even got it framed, and posted it on my Instagram.
What is something you enjoy doing outside of your studies?
When I'm not doing art or studying, I like to get outside. I love hiking, finding some cool rocks to show to my friends, and playing with my stinky dog. I also like to sleep and try to catch up on all the hours of rest that I missed out on during the week when I have classes.
