Rina was apprehensive as she awaited the arrival of her technically still husband. It had been so long since they had last seen each other, except for that one conversation...Not that it had really gone well.

Despite this 'date' only taking place because of their son's meddling, Rina had made the effort to dress nicely for the occasion; to make a good impression.

Any second now...She contemplated backing out then and there, before it was too late, but decided in the end to go through with the evening.

One dinner. It wouldn't be that hard, would it?

Headcanon update

One night Rina and Kaneki got completely smashed, and did one of those Vegas marriage things. Naturally as they hadn't planned it, it was a mistake but they left things as they were since it didn't make too much difference and they ended up living together anyway.

       “Oh? I love how that’s the first thing that comes out of your mouth. Instead of a—

                                         ’Oh, how are you, Kaneki?’ Typical Rina.”

He could already feel the tension building up between them. Truly, He never thought he’d see her again after he left. He never planned to.

                      “I didn’t mean to abandon him—

                               Truly, I mean’t to abandon you. If I could of took the child I would of.”

"Did you really think I'd just give you some casual, friendly greeting after you just vanished without a trace? I didn't even know how to get in contact with you."

Rina was doing well at maintaining her temper given the circumstances. There was a part of her that wanted to scream at him but she kept it under control.

"You would have taken him? If you think I'd ever let you get away with that, you're even more messed up than I thought."

Headcanon update

In the time Shuuya's parents lived together, Rina hadn't started abusing the child.

Kaneki had left them before their son had even reached his first birthday. At this time, Rina thought there was no point in hitting the boy and it was highly likely that if she did, any injuries would be serious. Besides, it wasn't like he'd remember.

She'd already been considering beating him when he was slightly older however, not that she voiced this to her partner.

Early on in the abandonment, Rina thought Kaneki was going to come back; that he was just hiding somewhere to screw with her and make her grateful when he came back.

When she realized he was truly gone for good, resentment started growing in the mother. Not just for him, but for herself and Shuuya.

Yet another failure.

Perhaps secretly, he never wanted a child. Perhaps that's why he broke all contact off.

Yet another reason to take her anger out on her son.

Headcanon update

After getting kicked out the house, Rina went to Kaneki, her child's biological father, and asked to move in with him, instantly mentioning her pregnancy in order to try and guilt him just in case he were to say no. She's still not sure how the conversation would have gone had she delayed that piece of information.
