INDIA IS IN! - HOP ABOARD!

International Day of Yoga 2018

As India and the world gears up for IDY-2018, my mind flies back to the experience of this day last year. All of us came back from the celebrations of The International day of Yoga at the Sector 17 Plaza in the heart of the city beautiful, Chandigarh, feeling charged and exhilarated and with an undisguised spring in our steps. The feeling of being part of a global phenomenon in which India is leading from the front, had made my heart swell with pride. 

With nationalistic pride we are seeing a global phenomenon unfold in front of our eyes. A phenomenon; an experience in which each one is winner! Social media is flooded with pictures of Yoga. Last year on Yoga day, there was news about yoga being done at minus 25 degrees by the Indian army at 17764 feet altitude in Laddakh and at the Siachen Glacier too! An Indian Navy spokesperson had tweeted a picture about the crew of a ship in the Indian Ocean doing Yoga on board the Ship deck! Pictures came gushing in from Burj Khalifa Dubai, Geneva, Melbourne, Maldives, UAE, Abu Dhabi … the list was endless! Over 180 countries participated! India seems to be everywhere! Yoga is something that is undisputedly made in India. India is in the lead and the world is falling in line! 

Now, as the excitement of the upcoming event builds up, everyone seems to be talking about it. It seems to be the hottest topic of discussion in social circles. Come to think of it, invoking the interest of people in Yoga; goading them to try this holistic method of well-being is a phenomenon that is moving by leaps and bounds.

'Health is wealth' is an idiom we have all read in school. But how many of us truly understand it in its true depth? A diseased body is essentially a dis-eased body. Yoga takes us from Rog to Nirog. Yoga makes us aware of the fact that prevention of disease is better than its cure. In counting one's blessings, we have heard our elders say, "Pehla sukh nirogi kaya ..." And surely, a sound mind can dwell only in a sound body ... hence, the importance of a nirogi kaya. 

Another dimension has been added to the propaganda by the Sports Minister Raghavendra Rathore adding a fitness challenge called #HumFitToIndiaFit. Social media is inundated with the who’s who of the country uploading their videos doing yoga or fitness in any form.

As the preparations for the big day gain momentum, I noticed that Yoga has beautifully unified all Indians. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians … all are participating and with aplomb! Who doesn’t want to be healthy? Everyone has suddenly realized that the right kind of breathing, yogic exercises, healthy eating and sleeping habits are the key players in attaining and maintaining good health. 

How wonderful that so many religious organizations are also leading from the front! The Patanjali Yogapeeth, Sathya Sai Organisation, Art of Living, Sivanannda ashram, Isha foundation are just a few names that are promoting Yoga and goading their members and followers to take to it.

 Come to think of it, Yoga costs nothing. A membership at a gym is something not everyone can afford. But Yoga just needs time and commitment. All you need is a quiet place and a sheet or a mat. If you don’t have a place in the house, just go to a park or a garden near your home. No frills, no fancies are required. It’s really like going back to the basics!

‘Yog’ in its literal sense means union. Yoga is a conduit for union with God. Through body, mind and sense control it teaches us to gain control over our physical self, mind, breath, thoughts … It is a form of discipline. And discipline is the mark of intelligent living. Let us all pledge to devote some time each day to the temple of our body. It’s a great way to achieve unity between the body-mind-soul trio! It's a win-win situation all the way. 

Kudos to India! Kudos to everyone the world over, in whom the spark of Yoga has been ignited! Kudos to Prime Minister Modi, who decided to take Yoga places – from door to door, home to home, country to country and heart to heart!

Let’s keep the good work going, till the Earth completes another round around the sun and we meet again, next Summer Solstice! Let’s resolve to be a healthier and stronger nation!
