You’d always felt his star-shaped pupils on you, as you wandered the halls of the palace. No one knew much about him. Honestly, he simply protected the heir and was greatly admired for doing so. Rumors of course spread that he was some long lost prince finding solace in a new kingdom, or that he was born for simply protecting the heir to the throne.

Which made a bit more sense, as he'd been around for as long as you could remember. Forcing him to play with you, and get into mischief. He was always quiet, always behind you and getting shy when you caught him following you.

He liked taking lessons with you, he'd help with literature and math. At times he'd join you to color, drawing pictures of you and him holding hands beneath the moonlight. Saying how he'd like you to see the moon with him, and admire all of the night sky. He enjoyed astronomy, he'd steal your books on the subject and read them. Pointing out the constellations, and the moon phases.

"I'll take you to the stars" he'd say, hugging you.

As you both grew into maturity, Dainsleif began to be admired by everyone. Yet as his popularity grew, he grew distant and quiet.

His face was one of masculine beauty, so, so beautiful yet manly. You couldn’t describe it very well but you understood once you saw it. His light strawberry blonde hair, his sparkling eyes, his build. Everyone’s dream man. Behind the beauty of course was a man of great talent with his sword.

Yet he closed himself off, retiring to his quarters once he left you for the night. Only to appear at your doorstep every morning to begin the same routine since he came into your life.

Until,

One day you followed him, as he bid you goodnight. He passed by maids politely bidding them goodnight as well, he did one last patrol before admiring the royal garden, looking up at your window with a certain yearning, lingering longer than he should've.

Playing with the kittens that lived in the greenery, until he finally arrived at his quarters, it was much more grand and gilded than the knights under him. As he opens the wooden door, he looks behind to find his highness (it's a wonder how he didn't find out earlier).

“…I’ll escort you back” he said without hesitation, taking your hand. "No Dainsleif, please let me in again"

"You've guarded me my entire life, you can't be closed off your entire life! Please, show me the stars like you promised."

His face stayed neutral, his twinkling eyes taking in your figure as he’d left it moments ago. He avoided your eyes when you mentioned the promise he had long forgotten, in place of it was his duty to you and your family.

There was a rumor that the beloved knight of the royal family was hopelessly in love with the eldest. You'd mention it once or twice, but Dainsleif never dismissed or denied the gossip.

He let you inside, excusing the mess of quills, astronomy books, papers, scrolls, scattering his floor and tables.

It was cozy and small, a few portraits on the wall of his family, furniture that seemed inherited, he apologizes quietly for the mess as he wasn't expecting company. Especially not you.

"Why would I want you to hide your true self" you ask grabbing his hand gently, "it seems your hunger for the stars hasn't been satiated"

His eyes met yours with a small smile, "yes... I've been studying them in my free time"

"If I'd known father would've made you an astrologist instead of a knight"

"Then I wouldn't have been your knight" he said standing up, towering over you- he'd grown so much compared to when you two were children. his hand moved to caress you cheek, "seems the rumors are true, there is a knight in love with one of the heirs"

He stiffened at the sentence, “it seems I can live in denial anymore can I?” he sighed. 

“Was it that obvious?” he mumbled the pink blush returning to his cheeks, “a bit” you teased leaning into his touch. “It’s not just gossip thought your highness” he replied his finger rubbing your soft cheek, “but I know you have a duty as heir-”

“But you’re a knight” 

“A knight born of lowly blood” 

“And here I believed the rumor you were a runaway prince” 

“What gave it away” he hummed, playing into the bit as he moved away to the kitchen. 

“Maybe your looks, your natural talent for everything and anything, kindness-” as you list all of his qualities you see his ears beginning to turn red, as he continued chopping vegetables. 

He was focused on making the soup when he felt arms around his waist and weight against his back, “I didn’t tell you because, well I didn’t want you falling in love with me” 

“Too late dain.”  Before he could process anything he felt your soft lips on his.

Dinner was long forgotten, his quills left on the desk alongside maps and books, his door was left slightly agape, the curtains slightly open. Just enough to see your beauty, the stars highlighting your perfection, Dainsleif could spend hours looking at you.

 Your body leaned up against his pillows as you looked solemnly into his eyes, his twilight eyes looking into yours taking in everything. He knows this won’t happen again, the way he's pressed against you, feeling your heart beat, your scent on his sheets. 

His nose pressed against your temple, it didn’t feel sexual. It felt like love, pure adoration. 

His large palm rested on the side of your head, whispering soft lovely things about you.

"Its a dream come true, your highness."

Your hand on his bicep, tracing the beauty marks the moonlight lit. They looked like small constellations scattered about. 

It was like an eclipse, the moon, you the sun. Always behind, never in front. Yearning, hoping for something from you. 

Until it all came together tonight, the sun and moon finally together.

Dainsleif x fem!Reader

It was a day like any other.

You were out and about, hunting the abyss order. After all, as the top healer of Khaenri’ah when it fell, it’s your duty to see to the well being of your people. Well, relative well being.

Although you can’t do anything about the curse, you can keep the warped minds behind the abyss order from hurting them any more. Thus, not long after Khaenri’ah fell, you cast off the mantel of healer and took up the sword, just like Dainsleif, your once lover.

After Khaenri’ah fell and it’s people were cursed with immortality, you two quickly lost sight of one another. You weren’t even sure he was still alive. He had been in the midst of it all that day and you know full well that even the most skilled warrior can fall in battle.

So the last thing you expected was to find him leaning up against a wall in the same tunnel you were searching.

“Captain?” Your voice is barely a whisper and it doesn’t seem to catch Dainsleif’s attention.

You clear your throat and try again. “Dainsleif, is that really you?”

Dain pushes himself away from the wall and turns to face you, freezing when he meets your eyes.

“Y/N. You’re here.”

You nod, itching to touch him, to confirm that this isn’t a hallucination 500 years in the making, but you can’t make yourself move.

“I’m here.”

“Why? You should be---”

“A hilichurl?”

Dain’s face twists in distaste, but he doesn’t say otherwise.

“I was lucky, I suppose. I was spared from that pathetic fate. Now I’m hunting those who torture them.”

“You too? No. I should have known you would. Always so sweet until someone messed with your loved ones.”

The force gluing your feet to the ground releases you and you launch yourself at your former lover.

“Dain. I missed you so much.”

Dain wraps his arms around you, burying his face in your hair. “Y/N. You’re alive. I didn’t think you could be.”

“I’m the Twilight Sword’s lover, how could I not be?”

“You still want to be my lover? After this long?”

You reach up and cup Dain’s face. “How could I not? As long as were both alive I will love you. I told you that right before Khaenri’ah fell. The minds of our people might be eroding, but the love in my heart won’t.”

“Y/N.” Dain groans. “You’ve been reading romance novels again.”

You burst out laughing, the sound bouncing off the earthen walls of the tunnel. 

“No, Dain, my silly captain, I haven’t. Unlike you, I have no issues speaking from the heart.”

“Don’t leave me again.”

“What?” You do a double take, pulling back so that Dainsleif’s words aren’t muffled by your hair.

“Come with me. If we’re both hunting the Abyss Order, it won’t hurt to travel together.”

“Won’t hurt?”

Dain flushes. “Please, travel with me, Y/N. To our end or the order’s end.”

“To our end or the order’s. That sounds like a wedding vow.”

“It’s not. But maybe one day...”

Your heart leaps, because for the first time in 500 years, there’s a “one day” not just a “yesterday”.

as admittedly tragic as rerir and tholindus were, i can't shake off the realization they were always doomed either way.

let me explain.

we know that the khaenri’ah’s eclipse moon dynasty was persecuting the crimson moon khaenriahs, and to the point of sysmatically killing them, so for the purposes of this essay(?), i will be treating the two as two sub enthic groups of the same people.

which is not a new thing either. all around the world and through out time, there are so many instances of the dominant group in a certain region enslaving/exerting malicious control over the smaller groups.

now of course there are levels to this. you could be a foreign minority in an empire but left alone in relative peace (like Jewish people under the Persian empire) or your people were conquered and you had follow the empires practices but other than that you were fine (the aztecs conquering their neighbors).

OR you were brought against your will into a new empire OR your own land was taken over and not only do you have to follow all those new rules but you have to ALSO give up cultural practices for new ones because yours are 'sinful' apparently. See: european-american colonization and the scramble for africa.

now the crimson moon khaenriahs used to be in power and we don't know how the the specifics of HOW they became a persecuted minority but it got to the point where their being systematically targeted and they are AWARE of it.

and in regimes like this ie nazi germany, european colonization, america especially now but since its dawn, it doesn't matter how much you appeal to the in group. It doesn't matter how much you think like them. It doesn’t matter how much put down your own people. You will ALWAYS be an outsider to them.

for example; I am a black american and i have always beeen acutely aware of how much my own government and country has historically hated me. But not everyone sees that. There are plenty of segments of the american population that think they are in with the in group. female MAGA voters, black MAGA voters, hispanic white supremeicists, immigrants that may pass for white but vocally/accent wise cannot, and gay republicans to name a select few. these people have been shown time and time again they can never be white enough for the people they so desperalty want to appease

and how tholindis was talking to that girl, a fellow crimson moon-ian whos family escaped khaeriah before the cataclysm, is EXACTLY how the above sound when they do that.

deluding themselves to the truth because the truth if where they truly stand is harder to accept. lowkey sounded like someone saying "well I never though the leopords would eat MY face!"

and, in tholindis' case, she would NEVER be enough for her own government

it didn't matter she was an offshoot and not a direct descendent. it didn't matter she didn't look crimson moon-ian

and rerir? the assassin for the government whose job was to systemically exterminate a group of people for their heritage finding out his loved one is one of those people?

lots of people like him exist in real life, married to what they believe are the 'good ones' (albeit in his case, he legitimately didn't know but was still willing to carry on his job as if she wouldn't eventually be tagarted again if he failed)

rerir's job and tholindis' heritage was ALWAYS going to hang over this relationship; they were just broken up before it could get any worse.

and the people who are giving rerir those documents on who to execute? they KNOW who she is to him. and either they didn’t care OR their hands were tied? either way, they had to appease the regime.

and just like in real life, everyone in khaenriah suffers from these systems. the people in power just hurt a little less but the average citizen hurts more.

and just like in real life, a whole nation suffers because of the actions of the government and those in power.
