This walled garden was ideal for capturing the evening fragrance of Hesperis matronalis var. albiflora (sweet rocket, dame's violet). This biennial or short-lived perennial will readily self- seed, often coming true to type. The scented white flowers are attractive to bees and other beneficial insects and are also edible looking great sprinkled over salads.

Plant iditification success? I mean, I think so!

Went for a walk down the bike path a bit looking for a patch of these specific flowers that wasn't in direct sunlight so when I ploped down with my book I wasn't roasting.

There is a lovely mix of white, pale purple, and purple flowers for these guys, and I do belive it is Dame's Violet! I kept seeing this one as I scoot to line dancing so I wanted to find out what it was!

That was originally the only plant I was looking for today, but on my way back home I spotted a picturesque patch of yellow flowers in a bit of a clearing. Really it was just part of the disc golf course that runs next to the bike path and betqeen the trees, but the way the sun hit it and the old felled tree behind it was very quaint.

This one took me a while, and actually halfway through trying to figure it out in a slightly more shady spot, I noticed another flower I was curious about as it reminded me of my catnip.

But this little yellow flower was giving me trouble as I wasn't sure if it was considered a vine or not, since it sort of sprawled across the ground.

But, I think this one is is Dwarf Cinqufoil.

I ended up switching to trying to identify the little purple catnip like flower before I'd found the yellow one. It was a lot easier lol

An interesting side note, I was wearing some workout material leggings while out on this walk and while identifying the last two plants I was getting bit like mad by some bug, but oddly only on my pants. Through them. But not my bare arms or anything else. Just a weird observation. Though thinking on it now, maybe the bugs didn't like the sunscreen?

That's all for this adventure. I'll be getting some more sandpaper shortly, so probably be back to sanding the rocking chair next update!

Not much change in the garden yet, but I think the peony will be blooming really soon!

Hesperis matronalis, Brassicaceae

Walking along the river Clyde in Glasgow you can see some large colonies of the biennial sweet or dame’s rocket towering over grasses and other herbaceus plants, in different shades from white to purple. Originally from continental Europe and northern Asia, the plant has naturalised in many parts of the world, including the British Isles and North America, where it was brought over during the XVII century.

As often happens, showy ornamental plants end up colonising new land as garden escapees, but aside from being tall and pretty, sweet rocket is also another great, low maintenance, sweetly-scented wildflower which happens to attract bees and especially butterflies and easily self-sow creating lasting colonies. Moreover, the young leaves, rich in vitamin C, are edible and quite spicy and tangy, as you can expect from a Brassicacea (member of the family which gives us mustard and cabbage), so they are great as a salad addition just as regular rocket. 

Double flowered cultivars of the plant exist and are beautiful, but in general I like simple, plainly accessible blossoms, because what’s the point in a wildflower an insect can’t forage anymore? If you didn’t know, in many double flowers most of the reproductive organs are mutated into additional petals, or the access to the nectaries is simply blocked, making the flower less valuable in a wildflife-friendly garden! 

Other Brassicaceae I wrote about are Cardamine pratensis or the cuckooflower, Raphanus raphanistrum or wild radish, Brassica oleraceae acephala and Brassica rapa var. rapa, or kale and turnip.
