In our time, one should be happy with modest dreams. No cosmos explorations for my peers and I. And even should there be such an exploration, it will forever be flavored with a nostalgic, the 1960s' inexorable aftertaste. No one among those coming of age a bit later than the 1960s was the first to cross the imaginary borders of the Solar system. One should be if not content then at least realistic with the realization that we are stuck on this planet, perhaps with a negligible exception of a chosen few, for the time being, and for the observable time. It is only too reasonable to despair! Stuck on this planet, and having spoiled and marred the cosmic dreams with the terrible visions of Tsiolkovsky, with the proliferation of military technology side by side with the cosmic ones, the contemporary utopist is devoid from such innocent and lovely pleasures as indulging into imagining modernity actively exploring the universe beyond this frighteningly small planet. Like Zizek says, to imagine apocalypse is easy, but try to imagine a small social change—impossible. And what is indeed difficult, and at the same time what it seems to be possible to think through, and what lends itself comparatively easily to the thinker's effort, is the imagining of the world where gender, sex, and, therefore, sexuality are constructed somehow differently, not like they used to be constructed. (But how exactly? Somehow in a less binary way; but what does it mean?) The grand question of the modernity is: it is not possible to transcend the limitations forcing us to exist on this planet of ours, but is it possible to imagine a peaceful coexistence and universal happiness on this planet at least, then? #damnations #monocle
