Week 1
Okay so i said i would go through and update you all on how i am doing on Daniel Kern's Acne.org regimen every week, and i still plan on doing that but i decided that since there are no real day to day responses about how things are going. I think it's really important for people who are suffering to feel like they are not alone, and one of the only ways i know how to show that there are people out there going through the same things that you are is to go ahead and show myself. After all this blog is about journeys, mostly the natural hair journey but the battle we wage against acne is also a journey as well as life which is the biggest journey of all. Okay, so without further rambling (which i am so prone to do...don't judge me) here we go.
Day 2 (July 22, 2011)
Night--Okay...Tonight my face is on FIYAAAAA! No seriously, my face really burns. Now i'm pretty sure that i have used way too much b.p to start off with. Last night and this morning my face burned, but it went away after a couple minutes, but not now. I washed my face at about 9 and applied my b.p sometime after that and it is now 12a.m. and my face is still burning. All i can think about is dunking my head into cold water...seriously. But i won't. I will not waste this b.p. But just so that you know, when Dan says start with a small amount of b.p so that your skin can get used to it he is SERIOUS! If you're like me and you were using another brand of b.p before and just switched to acne.org's b.p please remember that Dan's b.p is PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE, a.k.a it is really potent, so start with a tiny amount. I definately plan on using just a pea sized amount in the morning.
As far as the dryness goes, yes my face is much dryer than it was before. Although while i was using the Neutrogena b.p my face began to flake, my skin didn't really feel that dry. Now my face is pretty taut and feels very dry, even with lots of moisturizer and jojoba oil. I'm not sure about the moisturizer, it doesn't seem to be very moisturizing (or moisturizing enough for me) but we will see.
Day 3 (July 23,2011)
Morning--This morning after i washed i made sure to apply a generous layer of jojoba oil right after patting my face dry so that i could hopefully combat some of the dryness caused by the b.p. After waiting about 15 minutes for it to air dry i applied one knuckle legnth of b.p but i will admit i was not as gentle as i should have been. It burned! After waiting another 15 minutes i applied about 3 or 4 pumps ( my moisturizer has the old pump) of moisturizer and again my face burned. It continued to burn for a while. after about an hour my face was getting pretty taut so i applied some Cetaphil moisturizing lotion, which also burned. The burning continued for about 2 hours then tapered off to nothing. (thank goodness!)
Night--I did the whole regimen as per usual, but there was less burning. Still some, but it was less than this morning and the day before.
Day 4 (July 23, 2011)
Morning-- This morning i noticed that my face is looking a lot brighter (not LIGHTER but brighter, as in my complexion just looks a lot healthier) I think it could be the drying affects of the b.p. Oh, and another thing i woke up to today was that there was hardly ANY burning from the b.p when i applied this morning. Same goes for the moisturizer. I didn't apply DK's moisturizer because i was going to church and i knew i would be outside for a while so i used Cetaphil Oil free moisturizer with spf. It was pretty good, i only had to apply a tiny amount of the regular Cetaphil around my mouth and chin.
Night--No change...other than there was NO burning when applying b.p and the moisturizer! Yay! For a minute i was really wondering how the heck i was going to live with my face feeling like it was on fire. Oh and another thing that i noticed is that when i am not EXCEEDINGLY GENTLE when touching my face, it burns. Whenever i apply something like moisturizer or even b.p to my face and i am not gentle the burn is immediate. So seriously when Dan said you need to be very gentle to avoid irritation BELIEVE HIM! He knows what he's talking about. Im so hardheaded, don't judge me.
Day 5 (July 25, 2011)
Morning--Okay so sometime in the wee hours of the morning my face began to itch. Not just one spot, but it seemed that every few minutes there was another place on my face that was itiching. Of course i tried not to scratch (really, I did!) but as I'm sure you know there is only so much itching that you can take before you go crazy, so i scratched. When i got up in the morning, about to wash i looked in the mirror and i swear my whole nose was FULL of clogged pores. I couldn't stand it anymore. Seriously, I have never gone so long without exfoliating in a very long time! So i grabbed a Clean and Clear pore strip and slapped that bad boy on my nose. A couple mins later i slowly pulled it off and ...
DISGUSTING! Anyway, i rinsed all the residue off and proceeded to apply my jojoba. I am suprised to say that there was no burnng on my nose or any of the surrounding areas so maybe i will have to invest in those things again. The good news was that i did not have to apply the Cetaphil moisturizing lotion. (I did apply it later on in the day though, on my usual dry areas.)
Night-- I bought some St. Ives Apricot Scrub and gently applied it to my face being very careful to barely let my fingers touch the scrub. I didn't want to abrade my face. I followed that with some cleanser, etc, etc and when it was time for the b.p. I do have some burning. There is slight burning on my upper right cheek. I'm not really sure why but i guess it was the scrub. I know Dan says not to add anything to the regimen until you are clear but this rough face thing is driving me insane. However, after i applied DKR Moisturizer the burning went away.
Day 6 (July 26,2011)
Morning--No change this morning, well actually there was no burning. That was the only change. Still had to apply a little Cetaphil around the usual areas.
Night--I found a new spot on my jaw tonight. Slight burning on my forehead and my cheeks, though barely noticeable. Still slightly itchy, but that is to be expcted. I used a little more b.p. tonight. Not too much more but more than i have been using. I thought i would gradually increase the dosage so that maybe when i up the dosage as i'm supposed to on week 2, it won't be such a shock to my skin. Who knows?
Day 7 (July 27,2011)
Morning-- Found more new spots this morning. No biggie, i expected them earlier. Still used one and one half knuckles worth of b.p. There seemed to be no real change.
Night--Grand total of 6 new spots. Good news is that only one is rather large, the others are either tiny or under the skin, and may not even emerge (fingers crossed)
--Week in review--
My face is over all much more rough in texture than it was before i started the regimen. I could attribute this to the drying effects of the b.p or the fact that my face is not fully used to the b.p or possibly that there is lots of dead skin that has not been sloughed off because i am trying to be overly gentle with my skin. Who knows, i could have been the St. Ives apricot scrub that i tried on wednesday. I have no idea, but i'm not alarmed. I'm not having lots of burning (thank goodness!) which is a blessing because honestly if i was i don't know how i would have continued to put the b.p on my face. The burning SUCKS! But i would say to stick it out, because even if i do have a tiny bit of burning now it is NOTHING like the fire face i was experiencing before. Also, as i mentioned before my complexion is much brighter than it was before starting the regimen. I'm not sure what to expect or how the coming weeks will turn out but i have a good feeling about this.
ACNE & Me
So, let's see...I have been struggling with acne for a very long time. So long in fact that I don't really know the exact time it started, but let's say that it emerged around the time that i started my first period (I blame my period for all my problems l0l). It didn't really bother me at first. I was never one of those girls to really dwell on their imperfections, and almost everyone had acne around the same time that I did. However, there came a point when everyone else's acne was clearing up but mine seemed to be getting worse.
There came the point when I began to try almost everything that I could get my hands on to try and rid myself of this curse. But nothing seemed to work. I tried proactive...three times with no success (it only seemed to make my face worse), I tried every drugstore brand from Neutrogena to Biore but of course none of those worked either. Next was Differin Gel from the dermatologist, and i had an allergic reaction to that stuff so once again no dice.
For a couple of years after that I just gave up, and let my skin go ahead and do what it wanted. I was tired of fighting. A couple years ago i started to fall in love with makeup, but since my face was so broken out I felt that wearing makeup would only look bad. I hated that. Once again my acne was stopping me from doing something that i wanted to do. So I went out and bought some all natural wash and witch hazel thinking that that would make a difference, but as always my skin was not having it. Next was Clinique and a Clarisonic (which didn't help) then the Neutrogena Skin id (which also didn't help).
Then I stumbled upon a website called Acne.org. It was something completely different than anything I had ever seen before. It is a website where people all over the world come together and share their stories and experiences with acne. Of course i knew that there were other people in the world like me, but being able to talk to them and hear about some of the things that did or didn't work for them was very helpful. I don't feel so alone.
Acne.org is also home to a treatment called The Regimen, created by the owner, Dan Kern. He was just a regular guy that had suffered from acne, just like us and came up with a solution. He wanted to share what worked for him so the regimen was born.
The regimen consists of a cleanser, a treatment and a moisturizer. The crux of the regimen, the most important part, is the treatment: 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide. Dan says to apply generously and when in doubt, use more.
One of the things that really sold me on trying the regimen is that Dan isn't trying to shove his products down your throat. Yes, he sells all three parts of the regimen but he also gives you info on where and what you can buy yourself that will work just as well. Never has any other acne solution ever given me a choice to substitute products before. Another interesting thing is that Dan shows you EXACTLY how he recommends that you use the products. How many times have you read the directions on the back of an acne product and still not known exactly what you were supposed to be doing with it? With the regimen, Dan has several videos that show you how to wash your face while on the regimen, how to apply your b.p and how to moisturize.
So after many hours of scouring the website and countless times watching every video on Dan's youtube account I gathered up the courage to order the products. I didn't want to fool with buying little tubes of drugstore b.p. so I went ahead and purchased Dan's. I will say that the product prices are very cheap compared with the amount of product you receive (though it's hard to tell when looking at the pictures on the website.), but the shipping can be a little costly. I would recommend doing the auto ship option ( mine took about 8 days, including the weekend, to get to my house.), you have complete control over when you get your next shipment.
Okay, now that we have that very long story I received my order yesterday.
First i washed according to Dan's instructions, being careful to only wash for 10 seconds or less. After I gently patted dry, i applied a couple drops of Jojoba oil to combat some of the dryness that comes with the B.P.
After waiting 15 minutes for my face to completely dry I applied a full finger's length of b.p. because i had been using some Neutrogena b.p. all week and the week before so i thought i would be able to handle it. Whoa was i wrong...
Here are pics of my face after i applied everything.
I had quite a lot of burning after i applied my moisturizer but it eventually went away after it dried. I only applied 2 knuckles worth of b.p this morning.
I will be doing these updates every week. I think everyday is a bit excessive.
