“The Ecology of the Shade” (Dragon 126, October 1987, for article by Dan Salas) -- I think this one is by Valerie Valusek.  It seems to be missing her usual signature “V V” styled like 2 check marks, but this was spread across 2 pages with hard borders only on the top and right, and may have been cropped along the bottom and left.  The heroine with long tangled hair and romantic historical dress is a common theme in some of VV’s illustrations, though she also drew many women in sensible adventuring clothes and armor.
