I hear the phone ring and my mom answering it. Then, "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!!" Over and over and over. I run to her with my heart hammering, thinking the worst, and watch her with wide, terrified eyes. She hangs up only to tell me that my father is in the hospital with burns from hot stock at the mill. We immediately leave for the ER, about 30 minutes away. On the way I call my grandma and my oldest sister so they can meet us there. My heart is still hammering and tears are streaking down my face as I try to breathe. Still, all I can think is the worst. I'm picturing him lying there, covered in bandages from head to toe, barely recognizable. When we are about 5 minutes away, my sister texts me saying that she's there, not to worry, it's not as bad as we are imagining, and that he's only worried about his butt. At this point, my breathing gets a little easier as my body stops shaking and I can finally calm down a bit. We get to the ER and we all go in to see him. He's smiling and joking and looks a bit like the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz because the tip of his nose is red. The nurse tells us that he has 2nd degree burns on about 60% of his body, from his face to his knees, on one arm, and only the front. He now has to be transported nearly 2 hours away to the closest burn unit where he has to stay for about 2 weeks. This is horrible, but at least it's not as bad as my paranoid mind thought at first.
