Was just reminded of the writer who had trouble writing Sam because that "puppy dog stuff" is so different than how a "normal dude" would talk.

‘Eye of the Tiger’ was a Call Back
Dean, in the episode where he is facing being dragged to hell: We take this knife, and we go after Lilith our way. The way Dad taught us to. And if we go down, then, uh... then we go down swinging. What do you think? Sam: I think you totally should have been jamming "Eye of the Tiger" right there. Dean: Oh, bite me. I totally rehearsed that speech, too.
The very next time Dean is expecting to die, he corrects:

I’m curious if you have an opinion on Dabb’s writing so far. Like factoring out all of the nonsense that you’ve heard about later seasons and the finale, do you feel a certain way about his episodes? I just looked at my super nerdy spreadsheet of spn details and it looks like you’ve seen 17 of his up to this point.
a good question. if memory serves me right, i enjoy his episodes! daniel loflin gets credit too since they’ve always written together. they do goofiness well. i like those kinds of stories and love that side of dean. i remember worrying they made him a caricature of himself at times, but not a distracting amount. they also wrote some of my favorites — frontierland, weekend at bobby’s, plucky pennywhistle — so i like the story structures and ideas a lot. not to mention dark side of the moon, which i wouldn’t call a favorite, but character-wise it was insightful. they have a handle on characters’ personalities and motivations, and on spn’s flavor of comedy.
however, (i don’t know off-hand every moment like this, forgive me) i remember having trouble with there will be blood, the episode with the alpha vampire. the dialogue used towards him rubbed me the wrong way. i won’t go into the show’s racism, i’ll be here all day, but they had white protagonists calling the alpha — played by a black man — a ‘freak’ and had the alpha be guilty of kidnapping two white children. i want to emphasize casting rick worthy isn’t my issue, he was wonderful. implications of the writing is my issue. i can’t quite blame writers for many choices, but i can for creating space for these issues to arise and for words dean + sam use. i had to point that out and i’ll continue trying to.
as for dabb on his own, i might need more time to see. i realized 8x08 was the first where loflin wasn’t a co-writer, but it was definitely fun! goofy dean, lovable cas, amazing deancas, and even some sam moments that finally got me interested in the amelia storyline. it was a bit rough, but every character got time and the story was unique, and i love episodes that feel packed. so, in terms of writing and character development, he’s done a decent job so far! if you’re asking about anything specific, let me know. i’ll pay closer attention moving forward.
