LECTURE 6: MEET THE BEATLES (PART 1): Just for fun, here’s another cinematic version of Paul McCartney meeting John Lennon on that fateful day on July 6, 1957. This version is from the film In His Life: The John Lennon Story (2000), a now largely forgotten made-for-TV movie (it aired on NBC), starring Philip McQuillan as John Lennon and Daniel McGowan as Paul McCartney. As you can plainly see, the production values aren’t as top-notch as Nowhere Boy (2009). There are countless remembrances of this day, many of which match up in most ways, but differ in others. It’s the Rashomon Effect in action (Rashomon was a 1950 Japanese film, directed by Akira Kurosawa, about multiple different versions of the same event, which differ from storyteller to storyteller). If nothing else, it’s delightful to see a historic meeting reenacted – a meeting that will likely be dramatized over and over for years to come.
