Saddlin' Up...
I'm back at the busking.
Just a personal reminder: playing everyday is really good for a musician. Yet I feel self-conscious every time I set up to play on the corner. I remain conflicted toward the whole endeavor...
Anyway... I set up this evening on the corner of St. Peter and Royal in front of Rouse's. Just before I began singing, I spied Daniel McKenna walking toward me from across the street... and suddenly the self-consciousness I was pressing through melted away and the Quarter was home again.
I played for about three hours this evening... and in the process I met a few characters. One was a dude who walked up and said, "Whoa... you're playing a Martin. No wonder you sound so good."
A complement like that is worth more to me than a dollar in the basket. That's what I told him anyway after he explained how he wished he had some money to throw in my basket.
I also met a drunk homeless guy named Scotty who wanted my help finishing a song... another complement indeed.
It was a good night overall... but having traveled playing music in venues and homes all summer to come back to a corner on Royal Street in New Orleans, I feel the difference the place makes. Playing on the street, I need the validation, either by word or by dollar bill, just to feel that I'm doing good work. A regular gig has the validation built in because in the end, someone booked me into their room to play my music.
Anyway, I'ma leave it there for tonight.
Busking notes from 5/5/13
5/5
I took over Spring’s spot at Royal and St. Louis at about 5pm and played music for about two hours. Despite having warmed up for it, I never really got into my groove.
I did have a quick run-in with the Silver Man. He seemed in good spirits but not quite as good as when Christina is around. As I was playing my last song, I spied Daniel McKenna doing his slow approach. As he made his way, he filled his cup with an abandoned Red Dawg sitting next to the stop sign caddy corner.
I tried to pass the spot to him… he talked about beefing up his rig.
I walked the sidestreets around Bourbon, looking for a drink to put me in the mood to play. There was a time when I would have sat down and began to play music for my first beer of the night, but I have actually found it to be quicker to walk the perimeter of Bourbon Streetlooking for drinks which people sipped then discarded (12 dollars down the drain...)within the view of the first person like myself to come along.
