Beverly Hills Cop premiered in Los Angeles on 1 December 1984 before wider release 4 days later.

Producer Don Simpson conceived of the idea of a "fish out of water" cop transferring to L.A. in 1977, but his idea of a standard action movie changed when Daniel Petrie Jr. rewrote the script, adding humorous elements. Mickey Rourke was signed to play Axel Foley, but when production stalled, he left the project. Sylvester Stallone was then approached, but he demanded significant rewrites (removing all of Petrie's humor and changing it back to a standard action movie). Simpson didn't like Stallone's script and Stallone refused to make changes, and Stallone left 2 weeks before production was scheduled to begin (he would later use some of his script for 1986's Cobra). Eddie Murphy was then approached, and agreed to co-star if he could have input on the script (the final shooting draft was not finished until the first day of filming).

Beverly Hills Cop was an immediate hit, debuting at #1 at the US box office (where it would stay for 13 weeks), and would go on to be the highest-grossing film of the year.

Danilo Bach and Petrie were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
