You felt as if the walls were closing in on you as your breathing got heavier by the second. This had happened to you before and you knew that it would pass, but it never failed to make your hand rest on top of your fast-beating heart and pray that it won’t explode right there and then.
You tried calming yourself down by taking in deep breaths and looking at the pictures on the wall in front of you.
“Mister Ross?” spoke up a secretary, peeking her head through a half-opened door into the waiting room. A man across from you sat up and fixed his tie on his way into the office where the secretary was. You were at a job interview and you were stressed out of your mind. Even the water dripping from the dispenser, or the lady next to you tapping her foot regularly to the floor added to your state of mind.
You sat up as calm as you could and walked into the bathroom, locking the door behind you. Your fingers reached into your purse and pushed away the stray packet of chewing gum and the packets of tissues and grabbed your phone, speed dialing your boyfriend.
“Josh, hi, hey, yeah, can you please come pick me up?” you whispered in a hurry, feeling your heart beating faster.
“Sure babe, what’s up? Everything alright?” he spoke on the other end of the phone. Even his voice soothed you; you couldn’t wait for him to get there and get you the hell out of that place.
“Not really, no. Having an anxiety attack,” you whispered back and breathed in deeply, afterwards exhaling shakily.
“Hang in there, love. Better go out to get some air, I’ll be there in ten minutes, tops,” he answered you and you could already see the concerned look on his face.
After you thanked him, you hung up the phone and the feeling of guilt creeped into your mind – guilt that Josh had to deal with you when you were that way.
You walked out of the bathroom and straight to the front desk, asking the secretary to reschedule your meeting for the next day due to personal issues. Thankfully, she was kind enough to turn a blind eye to it and do as you asked her. After thanking her multiple times, you walked outside the twenty-story glass building, just as Josh pulled into one of the free parking spots.
You saw him get out of the car and locking it with a swift move and jogged to you. You were overly thankful for him being there, with you.
You threw your arms around his shoulders, hugging him as tight as you could, as if you were in the eye of the storm and Josh was your only hope. You felt a soft hand land on your back, patting it in circular motions.
“Hi babe,” he whispered in your ear, his voice slightly muffled. “I am here, no need to worry anymore.”
He grabbed your hand in his, interlocking your fingers as you started walking towards a bench in the middle of the square you were in. When you sat down, the coldness of the wood hit you, causing a shiver run down your spine.
“How are you feeling? Should I get you anything?” Josh asked, genuine concern and love written all over his face. You just shook your head.
“Thank you for coming,” you finally say, looking him in the eyes – those deep brown eyes that you loved since day one.
“Well, don’t think about it, really. How can I not come?” he revealed his contagious smile. “What do you want for lunch? I’m gonna cook today.”
You smiled, knowing exactly what he was doing – he was trying to get your mind off of your problems and hopefully end this awful state you were in, so you played along. “I don’t know, I’m thinking maybe some vegan curry?”
“Oh, vegan curry sounds delicious, my mouth’s already watering,” he laughed and squeezed your hand in his. After a brief pause, he continued, “You know, Jake called me earlier today and told me he had to cancel our night out, so I was thinking, if you want, too, we can watch movies together?”
“Sure thing, but I want snacks!” you chirp, your mind already a thousand miles away from the job interview and the work for university piling up on your desk.
Josh grinned his typical troublemaker smile, already sitting up and dragging you to the supermarket across the street.
Once inside, the two of you went straight to the snack aisle and threw in the cart everything you could find and knew that it tasted good – multiple flavors of chips – salt, cheese, onions, paprika –, different types of nuts, packed pretzels. Then you proceeded to the sweets aisle. Josh already went ahead and filled your cart with at least 6 boxes of mixed chocolate – he was a sucker for those.
You soon found yourself home, dressed in the comfiest pajama you had, watching Josh cook his special vegan curry recipe. “How’re you feeling, babe?” he asked while stirring with an incredible energy the vegetables with the spicy condiments in the pot.
“I am better, thank you,” you admit and realize how the panic attack was now more of a mere shadow of a bad dream, hidden somewhere in the back of your mind – and you intended on keeping it that way.
You ate the delicious curry – which had a touch of bittersweetness to it, Josh’s cooking signature – with the enthusiasm for a movie night with Josh growing exponentially.
In no time, you were cuddled against Josh’s bare chest, his arm wrapped loosely around your shoulders and his loose curls tickling your forehead.
“Josh,” you whispered, the sound coming out rather muffled due to the blanket you were wrapped up in. “I rescheduled the interview for tomorrow.”
“That’s great, Y/N! I will come with you and I won’t take no as an answer,” he informed you as he let go of the remote control on the bed. He reached over, his thumb caressing your cheek right before his lips pressed against yours.
“I love you,” you whisper and look up at him with a smile creeping onto your lips. “So, so much!”
“And I love you baby, and just know, whatever will happen, ever, I will be here.”
