Metallica Drops out of Ohio and Kentucky Festivals as James Hetfield Continues Recovery Efforts

- All other 2020 dates will be honored

Metallica dropped out of two-night headlining slots at festivals in Ohio and Kentucky so James Hetfield, who entered rehab in September 2019, can continue his recovery efforts.

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tool will fill in at Sonic Temple in Ohio in May; new headliners for Louder than Life in Kentucky in September will be announced later.

“As part of my continuing effort to get and stay healthy, I have critical recovery events on those weekends that cannot be moved,” Hetfield said in a statement. “I apologize to all of our fans who have bought tickets for these festivals.”

While disappointed by the news, festival organizer Danny Wimmer said he’s “nothing but proud and supportive of James.

“Let’s be straight - we have lost a lot of great people recently ... something needs to change,” he said in a statement. “As a rock community, we have to support those that are going to take a stand. And that is exactly what James is doing.”

Metallica begins a South American tour April 15 in Chile. That tour, and all other U.S., Wimmer-produced festival dates will go on, Metallica said.

“Like the moth into the flame, being human in this career has its huge challenges and can be difficult,” Hetfield said. “Your understanding helps the healing.”
