Daphnis was a Sicilian shepherd credited with inventing bucolic poetry.
He is regarded as the son of Hermes and a nymph, or simply as the lover of this god.
Pan instructed him in singing and playing the panpipe, and he is sometimes portrayed as Pan’s lover. He was protected by the Muses, who inspired his love of poetry. He composed bucolic poems with which he delighted Artemis on her hunts. It is said that before him, shepherds led a wild life and that Daphnis civilised them, teaching them to respect and honour the gods, and that he spread among them the cult of Dionysus, which they celebrated solemnly.
