Directly from my cousin who studies this shit and used the Roma as a model: "I'll use Roma as a parallel. The Roma have a language of their own that they speak. However it has dialects depending on geographic location, and it's impacted by the linguistic contours of the country they're in. So a Roma in the Balkans speaks a different dialect than one in Spain"
// While I understand that diff locations have diff dialects, my elf would not speak Orlesian/French, but just the common/English. From DA, I’ve only seen Orlesian people actually speak COMMON/English and not any French/Orlesian (unless this went over my head? lol), but they still have accents. Much like Ferelden and Starkhaven still have accents from their different locations, but still speak common.
My elf is Dalish, so he’d only speak some traditional Elven (if taught) and the common trade tongue. BUT if he was living in Orlais, would he have an ACCENT from interacting with Orlesians? Not know the language, no, but have an accent at all that would be Orlesian accent in nature?
I just am not entirely sure because I don’t know much about the elves all in the DA universe.
