Serious ask: I don’t fully understand the point of the excerpt talking about streetlights (Hinterlands, by Phil A. Neel). It seems to be trying to explain them as a method of control? Is it saying that they’re inherently bad or the way they’re used is malicious and why? I am interested and may try to get that book itself and read the whole thing.

Think of them as proto-security cameras. Yes, security cameras can and do prevent actual violence or injustice, but just as often they’re used to uphold the institution of private property, maintain oppression, violate human rights, etc. Everyone has something to hide, and the state will use that against you if you do something they don’t like

It’s also effective riot control. In well-lit, open areas, the better-armed side will win reliably, and the better-armed side is always the state. In the dark, disorganized guerrilla warfare has a big advantage, and like I said small alleys are much easier to barricade and defend than wide roads

I’m sure there’s even more to it, I haven’t read the book myself and would encourage you to do so if you’re interested. I don’t see it free on either the anarchist library or marxists.org, but it might be available elsewhere
