Previous Chapter
You stood in front of the mirror, a mixture of excitement and nervousness filling you as you admired the sparkling engagement ring on your finger.
You remember how a few days before, Rafe had surprised you with a proposal, finally taking ownership of you.
Feeling dread, the Kook King's about to make you his queen.
Speak of the devil, he knocks on your (Well his and Kiara's old) bedroom door popping his head out; signalling to you that its time for you to go.
As they arrived at the funeral home, You couldn't help but notice the whispers and glances from the attendees.
The news of their engagement had spread quickly, becoming the talk of the funeral.
You felt a twinge of self-consciousness but focused on the reason they were all gathered there – to honor Ward's memory.
Rafe, however, seemed distant and emotionless, and You understood why.
You knew the weight of witnessing Ward's passing together had left an indelible mark on Rafe's heart.
You silently vowed to be there for him, to support him through his grief, even as he seemed detached from his own emotions.
Now approaching Rafe, your heart aching for his pain.
You gently took his hand, intertwining your fingers, and whispered, "Rafe, I know it's hard, but I'm here. Lean on me whenever you need to."
Rafe looked at you, his eyes betraying a mix of gratitude and sorrow. He squeezed your hand, and they walked towards the front of the room where Rafe's family had gathered.
The funeral proceeded with a solemn atmosphere. The eulogies painted a vivid picture of Ward's life, his impact on those around him, and his love for his family.
As the stories were shared, You could see glimpses of the man Rafe's father had been.
He may have been a snob to you, but you couldn't be more grateful to him for helping you leave. Even though it was just for a short time, you are appreciative.
During the service, You kept a watchful eye on Rafe. You tried allowing him the space he needed to cope in his own way.
But you can't manange to process everything, you were there. You were there when Rafe pulled the trigger on his own father. Why because he sent you off? or was there more to the picture.
Finding a distraction you begin to watch your family.
Everyone joined her at the funeral of Rafe's father, Ward.
While your parents may not have been particularly close to Rafe's family, they still had a certain fondness for them.
However, Pope held strong resentment towards the Camerons, especially Rafe.
Watching as your parents exchanged polite nods with Rafe's family.
Your father offered a sympathetic smile to Rose acknowledging the shared grief they were experiencing.
Your mother, though reserved, conveyed a sense of compassion in her eyes as you greeted Sarah and Wheezie.
Your family took their seats, with Pope sitting at a distance from Rafe. Your parents, however, tried to bridge the gap by offering kind glances and small gestures of sympathy.
You couldn't help but feel a profound sense of guilt as you watched Rafe's younger sisters, Sarah and Wheezie, mourn their father's loss.
You carried the weight of knowing that you had been there when Ward passed away, while they hadn't. The guilt gnawed at her, knowing that they hadn't been able to say goodbye or be present during his final moments.
As Sarah and Wheezie wept and clung to each other, Your heart ached. You saw the pain etched on their faces, the longing for a chance to bid their father farewell.
Trying offer them solace, but the guilt lingered, making her feel like an intruder in their grief.
Approaching Sarah and Wheezie tentatively with Rafe in tow, You gently touched Sarah's shoulder.
"I'm so sorry, Sarah. If there's anything I can do to support you, please let me know."
Sarah looked up, her tear-stained face reflecting a mix of sorrow and confusion. "Why were you there, Y/N? Why didn't we get to say goodbye?"
taking a deep breath, struggling to find the right words. "I...I was there by chance, Sarah. It was an unexpected turn of events. I wish I could have changed things, but it happened so quickly."
Rafe and his police department concocted the story that Ward was caught in a crossfire with some pogues.
Where the two of you stumbled onto Ward moments before he died, Rafe relaying a statement that no amount of first aid expertise could save his father; Ward was pronounced dead at the scene.
You give Sarah and Wheezie a hug before saying "I want you to know that your dad loved you deeply, and I'm here to support you in any way I can. "
Rafe finally speaks, looking to his sisters. "I swear I will find those sons of bitches who did this to him"
You gulp, hearing that from your fiance.
Those and I quote "sons of bitches" well son of a bitch in this case, is the one who's hand is rested on your back.
You side eyed at Shoupe and Barry, who are standing at the rear.
Blaming them for their corrupt system.
Rafe grabs onto your hand giving it a squeeze, he noticed you looking towards the Sheriff giving you a stern look.
Wheezie, who had been quietly listening, spoke up with a trembling voice. "Do you think he knew we loved him? That we didn't get to say goodbye?"
Eyes welling up with tears as you watch your fiance bends down to his youngest sister. "Wheezie, of course he knew that" He takes his hand off of your back, you release a small breath becoming free of his strong embrace.
As Rafe continues, "And I know for sure that Dad, as stornch as he was was so proud of you sweet girl. of all of us" He looks back at a tear filled Sarah, nodding at her.
Though the guilt remained a lingering presence.
She stood in front of the mirror, a knot of excitement and unease twisting in her chest as her eyes traced the sparkling engagement ring on her finger. Only a few days ago, Rafe had surprised her with a proposal—finally claiming what he considered his. The thought sent a shiver of dread down her spine: the Kook King was about to make her his queen.
A sharp knock at the door made her flinch. His head appeared in the doorway of what had once been his and Kiara’s bedroom, signaling that it was time to leave.
At the funeral home, whispers followed them, glances cutting through the crowd. The news of their engagement had spread fast, and she felt the weight of every eye on her. She tried to focus on the reason everyone was gathered: to honor Ward Cameron’s memory.
Rafe moved ahead of her, distant and emotionless. She understood why—witnessing his father’s passing had left an indelible mark on his heart. She silently vowed to stand by him, to bear witness to his grief even as he seemed detached from his own emotions.
Approaching him, her heart ached at the shadow that lingered behind his gaze. She slipped her fingers through his, intertwining them with hers. “Rafe, I know it’s hard, but I’m here. Lean on me whenever you need to.”
He squeezed her hand, gratitude and sorrow flickering in his eyes as they walked toward the front of the room where his family had gathered. The service unfolded in solemn quiet, eulogies painting Ward’s life, his love for family, and the impact he’d left behind.
She caught glimpses of the man Ward had been. He had been a snob to her, yes, but she couldn’t deny the gratitude she felt for the role he had played in helping her escape—if only for a brief time.
Her eyes never left Rafe. She gave him space to process in his own way, but she couldn’t escape the memory of that day—being there when Rafe pulled the trigger on his own father. Was it revenge, justice, or something darker? She wasn’t sure.
To steady herself, she let her gaze drift to her own family. Her parents exchanged polite nods with Rafe’s relatives, though Pope’s resentment toward the Camerons was palpable. Her father offered a sympathetic smile to Rose, while her mother’s quiet compassion was evident as she greeted Sarah and Wheezie.
Her chest tightened as she watched Rafe’s sisters mourn. The weight of knowing she had been there while they hadn’t sat heavy on her conscience. They hadn’t been able to say goodbye. She had. And guilt clawed at her relentlessly.
Tentatively, she approached Sarah and Wheezie, Rafe at her side, and placed a gentle hand on Sarah’s shoulder. “I’m so sorry, Sarah. If there’s anything I can do to support you, please let me know.”
Sarah lifted tear-streaked eyes to her, confusion and sorrow mingling in her gaze. “Why were you there, Y/N? Why didn’t we get to say goodbye?”
Taking a deep breath, she struggled for the right words. “I… I was there by chance. It happened so fast. I wish I could have changed it, but it was out of my control.”
The story Rafe and his department had crafted—Ward caught in a crossfire with the Pogues—was what she repeated. They had stumbled upon him just before he died, no first aid capable of saving him. Ward had been pronounced dead at the scene.
She wrapped her arms around Sarah and Wheezie. “Your dad loved you deeply,” she whispered. “I’m here to support you in any way I can.”
Rafe finally spoke, his voice low and dark as he addressed his sisters. “I swear I’ll find those sons of bitches who did this to him.”
Her stomach churned at the words. The hand resting on her back belonged to the man who had fired the fatal shot. She gave a quick, tense glance to Shoupe and Barry at the rear, silent accusations simmering in her mind.
Rafe squeezed her hand, noticing her glance, and she released a breath as his pressure eased. Wheezie, voice trembling, finally spoke. “Do you think he knew we loved him? That we didn’t get to say goodbye?”
Rafe bent to her youngest sister, his voice calm but firm. “Wheezie, of course he knew. And I know for sure that Dad, as stern as he was, was proud of you… of all of us.” He glanced at Sarah, who nodded tearfully, a faint understanding in her eyes.
Even as they comforted one another, the guilt lingered like a shadow. She had been there. They hadn’t. And no amount of words or solace could erase that.
As she observed the somber atmosphere of the funeral, she couldn’t help but notice Kiara’s absence—her former best friend and Rafe’s recently former fiancée. The omission didn’t go unnoticed, and she understood the complexity of it; Kiara’s presence could have added a layer of tension, unease, and confrontation for Rafe and his family.
Yet, even as she rationalized it, a hollow sensation lingered. Kiara’s absence left a void, a missing piece in the web of their shared history, and the emptiness gnawed at her quietly.
Seeking a brief respite, she stepped outside the funeral home, her gaze drawn to the overcast sky, grey and oppressive. Lost in her thoughts, she jumped slightly at the brush of a hand on her shoulder.
Rafe stood beside her, his expression unreadable, eyes dark and flat.
“I noticed you were looking for Kiara,” he said, voice firm, a faint, almost smug grin tugging at his lips. “I sent her and JJ off to Barbados. You won’t be hearing from her for a while.”
She shoved against him instinctively, jaw tight with frustration. “You didn’t let me say goodbye.”
Rafe tilted his head teasingly, his grin widening. “You didn’t say goodbye to me before you ran off, so… we’re even.”
Her chest tightened, but he didn’t give her room to dwell on it. “What matters is that we’re here together, okay, baby girl? It’s you and me.” He reached down, brushing his hand against hers, capturing her left hand and pressing a kiss to her ring finger.
It was a small gesture, a new habit of his since giving her that ring, and even in the shadow of grief, it carried the weight of ownership, dominance, and a reminder that she belonged entirely to him.
As they left the funeral home hand in hand, Rafe’s heart felt strangely lighter, brimming with a fragile sense of hope and a flicker of happiness. The road ahead still promised challenges and shadows, but with her at his side, he believed they could weather anything.
Later, she sat alone in her room, the weight of her emotions pressing down like a heavy stone. The engagement ring sparkled coldly on her finger—a symbol of the commitment she had made to Rafe, one that now felt more like a claim than a promise. In the quiet solitude, doubt and unease crept into her thoughts, coiling like smoke.
Her eyes lifted to the mirror. A stranger stared back at her—eyes filled with sadness and confusion. The memory of Ward’s passing still clawed at her chest, the pain raw and fresh. That single tragic event had pushed her toward saying yes to Rafe’s proposal, a decision that now left her feeling cornered, uncertain, and bound.
She had convinced herself that accepting Rafe’s offer would bring stability amidst the chaos of loss. Yet with each passing day, doubt gnawed at her insides, eating away at the illusion of safety she’d built. Her mind drifted back to the funeral—to the emptiness in Rafe’s eyes, the stoic mask he had worn as if carved from stone. Alone with her thoughts now, she wondered if she had truly made the right choice. The sense of being trapped, of losing herself piece by piece, was impossible to ignore.
The weight of expectations—his and her own—pressed down on her spirit until she could barely breathe. With trembling hands, she slipped the engagement ring from her finger, holding it delicately in her palm. The design was intricate, beautiful even, but it felt heavy, more chain than jewel, binding her to a future she no longer felt certain about.
A knock at the door startled her. Instinctively, she slid the ring back onto her finger, masking her doubts beneath a practiced smile just as Rafe entered the room. His face lit up at the sight of her, unaware of the turmoil twisting inside her.
“Hey, baby girl,” he greeted, his voice warm, almost tender. “I was hoping to find you here. Are you okay?”
She forced a smile, pushing her doubts deeper into the shadows. “I’m fine, Rafe. Just needed a moment to myself.”
He began unbuttoning his tuxedo, and her stomach dropped. She knew what was about to happen. Predicting his next move, she started to undress too, her hands trembling as they peeled away the layers of fabric.
Rafe chuckled at her, a dark amusement flickering in his eyes. “You know what I’m about to say, don’t you, sweetheart?”
She gave the faintest nod, now standing in only her underwear, waiting for her fiancé’s signal. He had been relentless with her since that fateful night, making good on his promise to get her pregnant—too eager to replace what had been taken from him years ago.
Standing bare in front of her, Rafe’s presence filled the room, suffocating and magnetic all at once. His voice was low and commanding as he spoke.
