His mother left when he was young because he was sick and she didn't want to go through the grief of losing him, so she distanced herself and left him with his father (which she would later deeply regret).
He was too young to remember her, maybe vague glimpses of memory, but her absence still greatly affects him because Stoatspeck will. not. shut. up. about. it.
Stoatspeck has a hero complex, and the only reason he stayed with his son was for praise. That's it. Because of this, he constantly goes on about how the mother left so suddenly, and it must have been because their baby was sick and she didn't want to deal with him anymore. How heartless. But Stoatspeck stepped up and did what any good father would do!
Because Stoatspeck claims all of his actions to be great, if his son complains, he's ungrateful, even when Stoatspeck is actually being horrible (like giving himself the best nest materials because he's a hard-working father so he deserves it more and the kit is selfish for thinking anything else).
If his son ever pushes back, Stoatspeck guilt trips him. "I didn't have to take you in, and I did anyway. Do you know how hard it is to care for a sick kit in these woods? How far I had to travel for medicine? I stayed through it all, caring for you, keeping you alive. All those moons, I stuck beside you, and this is how you thank me? Maybe I should have left you to die like your mother did. Is that what you wanted?"
Due to Stoatspeck's parenting, his son becomes a pushover, thanking others for doing frankly anything. Oh, you hit him? Thank you for not using your claws, I'm sorry I made you upset.
And because of how much Stoatspeck talks about how hard it was to care for him and how he should be grateful Stoat bothered to stick around, he sees himself as a burden and prefers to sink into the background. He'd rather be alone than risk being a bother...it's not like it matters what he wants, sorry
