Random thought, but you know what I wanna see return? Advert-Games.
No, not the ham-fisted “hey look, our hero drinks *insert brand* to get power! Aren’t they COOOOOL!” or the “Hey! btw take a good long look at this *insert brand* logo on our hero! Totes cool, right?”
I mean games like Darkened Skye.
Sure the game was buggy as hell, but it had a self awareness that I loved. It was an advert-game for Skittles, so what do they do? They make Skittles literal pieces of magic being horded by an evil king. Fairly generic, right? But the beauty comes from the characters and the writing.
The game is stupid. It knows it’s stupid. And it embraces this. Main character, Skye, has a sidekick that is constantly breaking the fourth wall. My favorite example: There is a puzzle you can encounter looooong before you’re supposed to solve it. If you try to interact with it Drack(iirc), Skye’s sidekick, will stop you and say “we can’t solve this right now” or something to that effect. Skye askes how he knows this and he replies “I read the script-- I mean, I had a SACRED VISIONNNNNNNNN!”
Skye herself had great moments as well. She was snarky, clever(sometimes), and was 100% done with EVERYTHING. One of my favorite quotes is her response to Drack questioning her inability to swim: “I’m a warrior hero adventurerer goddess WHO CAN’T SWIM, OKAY!” She also kept a journal that the player could read if they forgot what they had done or where they needed to be. Some notes were of great importance. Then you get sh!t like this gem: “Cold and wet. These are words used to describe a dog’s nose. I am not a dog’s nose. Man it’s chilly!”
There is so much more that I could add, but what it all boils down to is: I miss stupid games that knew they were stupid and went with it.
