same place i am tbh.... like, i'm not saying that nazis don't deserved to be punched in the face, and i'm not saying you shouldn't, but at the same time like........ this is what we've come to. masked men punching neo-nazis on live television that's where america is right now

right? you stop to unpack it, you’re like... well, problem #1: nazis! being identifiably fascist in public spaces so much so that people feel the need to punch them?? like not even nazi-ish. not subtle, maybe-it’s-not-really-nazism. full on nazism. in 2017??? problem #2: punching being the only solution to this nazi problem since traditional remedies have failed. problem #3: it was on live tv so there’s a whole media giving the nazis air time/the spectacle/we only see acts of protest that are mass consumable thing going on.

Yaaaay! After I finished my MA, I kept getting emailed about an overdue book that I had already returned but for a while it was like, "IT'S THE BEATING OF THAT HIDEOUS HEART!" Eventually they stopped. Congrats!

See, at this university they didn’t appear to have realised I still had the book, so I probably could have kept it but I’ve been bullied into library compliance by the previous alma mater that wouldn’t even let us progress to the next year (let alone graduate) if we hadn’t paid our library fines.

there is a not-very-cool wiggles hit called shimmy shimmy shake. while each of the physical entities that made up the original wiggles *did* exist in the 80s the group itself formed just after, in 1991. 

(also I CANNOT use it, if not because it’s wrong to sully children’s entertainment then certainly because there’s no reason the character would be familiar with the wiggles.)

I KNOW!! it’s like shit son, communism is not the same as (semi)socialist policies that provide public services for those without wealth/in need. no one is arguing for unfettered free market capitalism (or at least, I am not) but I feel like there’s a happy medium here that doesn’t involve widespread famine and the government controlling the damn media. 

it’s the worst spoiled brat liberal arts leftie bs I ever encounter and it involves an ironic lack of ‘check your privilege’ because it is a bougie luxury to abstract from historical experience and argue that communism is a remotely good idea. 

besides, they’ve run the numbers and planned economies can’t work.

I know the struggle of wanting everything to be as good as possible, but sometimes the best thing you can do is just get it in. (I tell myself this a lot, and it works some of the time, not most, but those few times it does)

see it would actually be fine if ‘wanting to do everything as good as possible’ translated into ‘worked on project for the entire semester like i was meant to.’ But yes, I am definitely at the ‘close enough is good enough’ stage. sigh.

ETA: I ALSO WANT TO SEE THAT UNO MOVIE. It sounds like the kind of whacky ridiculous premise that could be really good.

What is permanent income hypothesis? (I ask this with full knowledge that I could google it, but I like when you explain stuff to me haha.)

I enjoy explaining! The permanent income hypothesis is part of the reason Milton Friedman won a nobel prize. It’s the idea that consumers base their consumption not just on their income today but also their projected income over their lifetime. A close cousin is Modigliani’s life-cycle hypothesis which is that consumers make consumption decisions based on their life stage, tending to save more in their most productive working years then draw down on savings during retirement.

Basically: we all prefer to consume at a relatively steady level so if I foresee a reduction in my income, I’ll spend less today so I can eke out my moolah for a longer period of time. On the other hand, if I know I have a large payday coming, I’ll buy more stuff today even though I don’t actually get paid until tomorrow. (Which is DEFINITELY what I have been doing oops.)

People are not necessarily perfectly rational model consumers in isolation, but in aggregate this theory gives a better insight into consumption patterns in the economy than vanilla Keynesian macroeconomics, which sort of states that people have a marginal propensity to consume, they save what they don’t consume, and the saving rate and the consumption rate depend only on income today.
