Plot: you go to see Data's recent invention which happens to be his child
A/N: YO IT'S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY! I wanted to post something for today while I work on a request and this has been sitting in my drafts forever now.
Data decided to call you, Wesley, Geordi, and Deanna into his lab. He's been working in there for weeks without telling anyone anything.
"I have no idea what he's doing," you told Geordi.
"Shocker. You're the one who sleeps with him," Geordi mumbled, making you laugh and making Wesley's ears turn red.
The four of you made it into Data's lab and he looked at everyone, surprised.
"Oh, you are early. Just a moment, please," Data said as the door closed, leaving everyone confused.
"I wonder what he's working on," Wes mumbled softly.
"You may enter now," Data announced as the door came open. Whatever was in the middle of the room was gone now.
"Data, what are you doing?" You asked while walking up to him.
"Yeah, Data, what's going on?" Wesley asked while scanning the room.
"I have invited you to meet someone," Data said while pressing buttons on his keypad.
Down came an android, but it didn't look like on, instead it looked like a mannequin.
"This is Lal. Lal, say hello to Counselor Deanna Troi."
"Hello, Counselor Deanna Troi," it spoke, making you smile.
Data did everyone's introductions, except yours for some reason.
"Who is that behind you, Father?" The android asked and you were confused.
"It called you "Father", Data." Wesley told him, confused by it all.
"Yes, it did. Lal is my daughter," Data stated.
Lal was precious. Everything about her reminded you of Data, except for Data didn't call you mother.
"Mother, what is this?" Lal asked before picking up one of your books.
"It's a book, sweetie. It tells a story on several sheets of paper," you explained.
"Ah, a book," she mumbled before sitting it back down.
"Mother?" Lal asked while sitting down on the couch.
"Why are you my mother and Data my father?"
You chuckled before sitting next to her. "Well, Data and I experience romantic attraction to each other and since he made you, that would make me your mother."
"But you are not an android?"
"Then why would you love Father? He is different from you."
You took Lal's hand and smiled at her. "I didn't care that he was different, I just knew that I loved him. When it comes to something like love, then you don't care how different that person is, you just care about loving them."
"I see," she mumbled, "Love is the concept of not seeing the differences and knowing that you care for them, no matter what."
"Exactly," you smiled at her. "Now you have to go, Guinan is expected to see you."
"Yes, thank you, Mother," Lal slightly smiled at you before standing up and leaving.
First it started with the threat of Starfleet taking Lal since she was a new creation. Then came the emotions.
Lal was experiencing emotions.
"Data! What's wrong with Lal?" You asked him as Lal went into his lab.
"She is programmed to report back to the lab when there is a malfunction. Did you see anything wrong?"
"She went into Deanna's quarters and then she left. Deanna said that she felt the fear and anxiety in Lal. Data, if Lal has your programming-"
"This should not be happening. I will try to fix the malfunction."
"Please, try and save our little girl," you whispered.
"I will," he nodded curtly.
Data came out of his lab and you knew something was wrong. "(Y/N), come with me please."
You followed Data inside and Lal stood there.
"Lal, sweetie, how are you doing?" You asked softly as Data put his hands on your shoulders.
"I know I am going to die soon. There is nothing to do to stop it, but Father tried his best."
"I know he did, he always does his best," you smiled sadly.
"I know Father cannot feel emotions, but I know he loves me because he cares for me and that is love."
"Lal," Data whispered. It was more of a surprised whisper.
"I love you, Father. I love you, Mother."
"We love you too, Lal," you told her before planting a kiss on her artificial forehead.
"My family," she said softly before she powered down.
You cried silently as Data just stood there, but you knew he was sad. This was his daughter, his own creation.
"Come on," Data said. "Let us go back to my quarters."
And you both did and you let your emotions out.
"She was something, wasn't she?" You asked him. "She thought I was her mother. I was a mother."
"(Y/N), you were the best mother Lal could have. She learned about love from you."
"I know," you smiled at him, the tears still on your face. "I know."
Data came over and wiped the tears away. Even though he didn't show anything, you knew that he was broken up over this. Lal was his daughter too.
"I had a chance of having a family, I had a little girl," you cried. "We both did."
"Have you always wanted a family?"
"Yeah," you said softly. "I always wanted a family with you, but we can't."
Data hugged you and stroked your hair. "I did not know this."
You stayed there and cried into Data's shoulder.
"I can always build another and keep them as our own. We can have our own family."
Data just hummed as he kissed the top of your head. "Yes. I will make sure of it."
