“It’s the marbling that makes it melt in the mouth.”
Looking up at Vincent, Samuel offers him a smile, one meant to disguise the fact he’s just spent the last few seconds moving a butter glazed Chantenay carrot about his plate while imagining how much more comfortable he would be sat at home on his sofa eating a dirty burger and fries. The wagyu beef is nice, sure, but he imagines it would taste much better if he wasn’t sat under a bright spotlight in an expensive suit that doesn’t breathe very well, in a room filled with people that seem compelled to wish Vincent well upon every entry and exit. In truth, they’ve only been dating for a little over a month now and Samuel still isn’t used to this kind of treatment; the fancy bars, the expensive food. Samuel can afford to pay for it, he makes enough, but Vincent won’t allow it, part of his personality it seems; that machismo responsible for driving the Italian to display dominance whenever possible.
He nods mutely as he listens to Vincent talk about a deal he’s just made, an investment in a sports club… investment; that’s what the Italian consigliere calls it, but in truth it’s money laundering dressed up as honest business, but that’s the thing about Vincent he supposes; he has a way of legitimising the illegitimate. He has a politician’s smile and uses it to disarm, charm and persuade government officials to make the kind of deals they wouldn’t dare admit to under oath – Samuel’s sure Vincent’s done more damage with that dazzling smile than Sam has ever achieved with his M4A1 rifle.
Glancing over towards the clock, Sam suddenly realises it is getting late; he’d hoped to be back to the apartment in time to watch Alien; the Director’s cut is on cable tonight, of course those were his plans before Vincent invited him out tonight to celebrate his ‘business’ deal. At this point Sam’s given up on watching movies with Vincent; he never seems to want to settle and always insists on talking through the critical plot points or making out with him, just when it’s getting to the good bit. Admittedly Samuel rarely has the consigliere over to his place these days, not since Sam woke up in the middle of the night and in his sleep disorientated state, thought he was sleeping next to Rick. The realisation of his mistake was abrupt and harsh; it’s a difficult thing; to feel like you have the wrong man sleeping in your bed, it’s even more difficult when that man is technically your boyfriend.
Pulling his phone out of his pocket, Samuel checks his texts, a smile spreading across his face as he finds one from Grimes:
[Job went well, back at the hotel now, Directors cut of Alien is on tonight.]
If Rick was with him tonight, they’d likely be settling down on the sofa right now with a couple of beers, Seamus crawling into Grimes’ lap as Sam expounds pointless fact after pointless fact - like the fact the film was originally going to be called ‘Star Beast’ and that Ash’s blood was made using pasta and caviar. This in turn would likely cause Rick to call him a nerd and smile at him in a way that in Sam’s mind, always corrects it to ‘adorable’ nerd.
Pulled from his introspection, Sam fills the silence by eating another absurdly tiny carrot.
“Just business.” He replies, slipping his phone back in his pocket with a relaxed smile, one that disguises how much the question frustrates him. He knows Vincent has only taken to calling Rick his ‘ex’ in the hope that Sam will correct him and in doing so explain the situation more fully. He has told Vincent very little, only that his friendship with Rick is complicated and, following more questions from Vincent, that they were kind of involved at one point. ‘Kind-of’; Sam knows it’s a far too casual and overly simplistic way to describe the literal love of his life, but Vincent doesn’t yet deserve to know any more about it; it’s none of his business.
This night has taken a turn for the worst and it is only now Samuel is truly realising it; that he isn’t really here, that he doesn’t feel fully present, because he’s thinking about Rick again, spoiling the present with memories of the past, because it doesn’t yet feel like the past, not to Sam.
As the waiter approaches, Sam picks up his glass of red wine and finishes it in one large, overly indulgent gulp, determined not to allow Vincent to order any more.
“Do you want to get out of here? Go back to yours?”
The suggestion is brazen and bold but Sam doesn’t want to sit here a moment longer, making polite fucking conversation under these annoyingly bright lights, surrounded by strangers, staring at a plate of food he has no real intention of finishing, drinking wine he can’t appreciate.
“Is my needy little bottom hungry for something more than desert?”
The waiter coughs awkwardly with surprise while a woman sat at the table next to them audibly chokes on her oyster, all while Sam sits in abject silence, his expression one of stark disbelief, his cheeks bright crimson as he regards the consigliere and that playful smile that confirms the statement was absolutely designed to incite him; Vincent likes it when Sam’s defiant.
Taking Vincent’s hand, Sam is swiftly led out of the restaurant towards a waiting car, heavy with hope that his night will improve and he can get Grimes off his mind, even if it’s only for a few hours. At least Rick is safe; he’s probably stretched out on a hotel bed right now, eating room service and watching Alien; if only Sam could stop wishing he was there with him.
