What is a Dauthi (flavorfully)?

The Dauthi are a unique humanoid race from Dominaria that were trapped in the Shadow Realm after losing a game to Yami Yugi. I mean the Soltari. They were trapped in the Shadow Realm during a war with the Soltari. They’re mostly violent jackasses, but whether that’s due to bad parenting or due to being trapped in Shadow for however long is uncertain.

What is a Dauthi (mechanically)?

Dauthi are small black creatures with the Shadow keyword, appearing in the Tempest block. As the creature type was retroactively added to all these cards years later, no card cares about the Dauthi creature type.

Can I make a Dauthi deck?

Small black creatures with Shadow make a decent win condition while otherwise using black spells to kill things, so it’s not unreasonable. There’s no explicit rewards for “Dauthi’, but Dauthi Ghoul and Dauthi Warlord both reward playing creatures with Shadow. Stronghold Overseer works as a top-end Shadow lord,  though costs too much mana for a deck filled with Dauthi.

In Commander, there’s not enough Dauthi to make it work.

Is Dauthi a good creature type?

Dauthi is a race to link creatures that should have had a link from the get go but simply didn’t have one. There’s no ‘good’ creature type to give them for a race, but it’s also questionable whether Dauthi should be on all these cards. Dauthi Jackal has creature type Dauthi Jackal, but if it is a Jackal belonging to the Dauthi, it’s not a Dauthi. Dauthi Mindripper is clearly not a humanoid either.

The Dauthi type isn’t wrong, but it’s unnecessary, doesn’t do anything, and is clearly implemented incorrectly or doing something very wrong if the actual jackal is also a Dauthi. Whatever Dauthi is trying to do, it’s not doing it well and it’s not doing it right. Dauthi is not a good creature type.
