Sarah Connolly LIVE from the Royal Opera House this Saturday!

In case you haven’t heard: Dame Sarah Connolly is scheduled to return to live stage performance (for the first time since November) with Das Lied von der Erde, in a chamber arrangement, this Saturday, June 20, at the Royal Opera House. She’ll share the audienceless stage for Das Lied with David Butt Philip; the program also includes dancer Vadim Muntagirov interpreting the Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice as choreographed by Frederick Ashton. 

The concert will be streamed live on the web as part of the “Live from Covent Garden” series. There is a ticket charge of £4.99, and I recommend paying in advance so you don’t have to fumble with the interface at concert time. My confirmation email says, “Live from Covent Garden will also be available in your Vimeo Library for 14 days after the event.”

I’m glad Glyndebourne has finally put this clip on YouTube: Dame Sarah Connolly, in the role of Gertrude, sings (part of) “There is a willow” in the world premiere production of Brett Dean’s Hamlet, 2017. With Rod Gilfry as Claudius and David Butt Philip as Laertes. You will also hear an offstage chorus.

For some reason, Glyndebourne has chosen to cut off this scene halfway through. A more complete clip of this passage exists—unlisted—on YouTube (please note the warnings in the post!).

* Streaming of the first part, which runs almost two hours, will actually be delayed by about an hour so that at-home audiences don’t have to sit through Glyndebourne’s traditional 90-minute “long interval.” After a break of about half an hour, the second part will be streamed live, concluding around 9:30 p.m. British time.

Aha! I realized today that although the Hamlet livestream is no longer available on the Glyndebourne website, it will be available until September 7 on Medici.tv. If you don’t already have a Medici.tv account, you must create one in order to watch the full Hamlet video, but it’s free to create an account. 

Depending where you are located, you may also be able to watch the Glyndebourne Hamlet on Culturebox. I assume it’s available in France, but I’m not sure where else. It’s blocked for me in the US.
