Two Teens, Two Young Adults Accused Of Florida Shooting Spree That Claimed Two Lives

FLORIDA – Police in Florida have arrested two teens and two young adults in connection to a week long shooting spree that left two people dead. The youngest of the accused, 15-year-old Konrad Schafer, shot another teen because he thought it would be fun.

Police had been working around the clock trying to determine who was responsible for a rash of shootings that mostly targeted homes and parked cars in the county. Bullet casing left at the scenes had investigators convinced they were dealing with the same gun in all of the incidents.

The shootings appeared to stop on July 2, the day police arrested a man in connection to a drive-by shooting that occurred within 1,000 feet of where 17-year-old David Guerrero was fatally shot on June 26 while waiting for a bus to take him to work. The man was described as a person of interest in Guerrero’s death, but that is no longer the case thanks to some solid police work and a group of murdering morons.

A break in the investigation came after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s ballistics experts determined a Hi-Point carbine had been used in the random shootings in the area. Investigators visited local gun shops and found that the exact model they were looking for had been sold by Mega Gun and Armory in Kissimmee on June 24, one day before the random shootings began.

Police visited the gun’s buyer, Lothar Hans Schafer Jr., who told police he bought the carbine and 100 rounds of ammunition because his son Konrad “was having problems with unidentified subjects in Poinciana, Florida.” Also at the home was Victoria Rios, a 17-year-old runaway. When she was questioned, she told the detectives Konrad told her he drove around the county shooting at houses with the rifle. She also informed them ”there were bodies attached to that gun.”

That’s when police learned that Konrad was the one responsible for Guerrero’s shooting death. ”He thought it would be fun to shoot Mr. Guerrero,” said Kissimmee police Chief Lee Massie. They also learned that Konrad, Victoria and two others were involved in yet another murder.

Konrad, Victoria, 20-year-old David Damus and 20-year-old Juan Sebastian Muriel visited the home of 22-year-old Eric Roopnarine on July 3. The older man thought he was paying Rios for sex, but quickly found he wasn’t getting any runaway poonanny and was begging for his life as Dumas pointed the Hi-Point carbine in his face and demanded money.

Roopnarine gave the group $300, but Dumas shot the man in the face anyway. Afterwards, he instructed Konrad to slit the man’s throat, which he did. The group then made off with a large-screen TV, an Xbox and assorted electronic equipment, reports state.

With this new information, police enlisted the help of the Central Florida Metal Detecting Club, a volunteer group that has helped find evidence for police before. About 20 to 30 volunteers showed up in Kissimmee to scan the area near where Guerrero had been shot to death and it wasn’t long before they found a .45 caliber bullet casing that matched a casing found next to Roopnarine’s body, as well as the other casings retrieved from the various shootings around the county.

Damus, Muriel, Rios and Konrad Schafer are each charged with first-degree murder, home invasion with a firearm and grand theft in connection to Roopnarine’s death. Konrad Schafer also faces a pending murder charge in Guerrero’s death. Both Schafer and Damus also face charges of shooting into occupied dwellings, unoccupied structures and cars; discharging firearms in public from vehicles; and criminal mischief.

Damus and Muriel are being held in the Osceola County Jail without bail. Rios and Schafer are being held in the Orange Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Orlando.

Last night, I attended the media launch of BoHo Bodega, the "world's first non-profit non-profit pop up shop focused on bringing easily accessible environmentally-sound products to consumers in New York."  Basically, it's a showcase for environmentally-friendly products and the store, located in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood, will remain open through October 25.  Up until then, different environmentally-themed events will be taking place there which you'll find in a post I've reblogged above this one.

The opening included "NYC's first ever live urban opera," a performance of selections from Rachmaninoff and Scriabin operas by David Dumas (you'll find the video embedded here), performance artist Yoshihiro Watanabe changing costumes throughout the evening, recycled couture headpieces from designer Hayley McCulloch, an actor pretending to be a traditional deli owner whose name didn't appear on the handout provided at the event unfortunately, and "eco-friendly cuisine" which consisted of eggplant as well as ham and turkey (I think) sandwiches.

Joining me at the opening were Greentarget's Andrew Graham, Agent16's Jenean Chapman, and Green and Save's Allison Kade.  Not long after the performance concluded, we headed to the East Village for Sean Captain's Tuesday Night Drinking Club at Common Ground.
