The black dress they were speaking about was the dress Diana wore to her first royal engagement with Prince Charles when they were just engaged to be married, it was a fundraising concert at Goldsmiths Hall, London in aid of The Royal Opera House on March 9, 1981, four months before their wedding.
David Emanuel, 68, spoke to Lorraine, ahead of a new exhibition of Princess Diana's iconic wedding dress at Kensington Palace, which he co-d

According to an interview with actor Emma Corrin, the dress she wears was made using the original designers’ patterns.
After a years-long wait, The Crown is finally introducing Princess Diana as a character for its fourth season, which will premiere on November 15. Over the last year, on-set photos have emerged, showing actor Emma Corrin as a perfect match for the young princess. The Netflix show also put energy into recreating her iconic wardrobe, and a teaser released in August featured Corrin in a spot-on replica of the dress Diana wore in her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles. In an interview with British Vogue, Corrin explained that the show painstakingly recreated the dress by working with the dress’s designers Elizabeth and David Emanuel.
“The Emanuels, who designed the original, gave us the patterns, and then it was made for me,” Corrin told the magazine, adding that about 10 people had to help her put it on because of its size. “I walked out and everyone went completely silent. More than anything else I wear in the series, it’s so… It’s her.”
Corrin also said that she felt like she came to understand Diana while playing her. “I feel I’ve got to know Diana like you would a friend,” she said. “I know that sounds really weird, but I get a great sense of companionship from her. I suppose, over time, you kind of start to patch together a sense of empathy and a sense of understanding. I love figuring people out.”
Diana’s actual dress used to be on display at Althorp House, the estate belonging to the Spencer family where she spent her teen years, but since 2014 it has been privately owned by Prince Harry and Prince William. The Emanuels were chosen to design the wedding dress after meeting Diana through a Vogue editor and dressing her for a few formal events. In 2017, David Emanuel told E! News that he and his then-wife Elizabeth intentionally designed the dress’s 25-foot train to break the record of 20 feet set by a previous royal bride.
Though some of The Crown is “heavily dramatized,” as a royal insider once put it, the show’s historical consultant Robert Lacey is a royal expert who pays close attention to the details. It’s also not the first time the show has commissioned a replica of a famous royal wedding dress. When Vanessa Kirby’s Princess Margaret married Antony Armstrong-Jones, the show dressed her in a quickly-made copy of the sleek gown designed for the occasion by Norman Hartnell.
In 2019, the show’s costume designer, Jane Petrie told Vanity Fair that perfect replicas aren’t very common on the show. “There aren’t as many copies in The Crown as you might imagine: we only did it when it felt right,” she said. “More often we’d take the spirit of what’s real and adapt it for the scene, working closely with the show’s royal advisor, Major David Rankin-Hunt, who was on set all day to answer any questions about royal style and etiquette.”
