davis likes to think of himself as a good, attentive coach. he knows his players well and can easily tell when their minds aren’t on the game. diego’s lack of focus during the warm-up was blatantly obvious. “i don’t know what’s gotten into you, but you need to pull it together,” davis says sternly, proactively massaging diego’s shoulders just in case tense nerves were all that’s wrong. he probably would’ve been more lenient with the boy if not for the fact that today was the deciding game for the state championships. he needed his star player at peak performance. “i hate to pile this shit on you, but the entire team is counting on your ability to keep a clear head. you can talk to me about anything, you know that bud. this locker room is a safe place. whatever goes on within these walls stays right here. i’ll give you whatever help you need.” davis doesn’t want to be too pushy since he knows just how sensitive diego can get, but time his running out. to help with his own nerves, he really digs into the boy’s shoulders, searching for any muscle knots he can rub out.
