The armor that Zod, Faora and the kryptonian soldiers wear are different from the armor we see earlier in the film. It is much older armor having been scavenged from dead colonial outposts.
They are like the armor that Uther Pendragon and the armies wear when they battle each other at the beginning of Excalibur. The image of them raising from the swamp, more bestial and cruel.
Zod and his soldiers are regressive forces.
