— warnings : arranged marriage, nanami is extremely cold! angst no comfort, no use of y/n
the princess stared down at the big rock on her finger, dazed and utterly terrified of what’s happened. her voice from when she was little rings out in her ears: when i grow up i’ll have a loving husband! i’ll marry for love, not out of duty, that sounds so sad! i want a happy ending! gods, younger her would be so disappointed to see she married out of duty.
and for fuck’s sakes, the man she was married to barely paid attention to her. nanami kento was a cold, quiet, and calculating man. even his vows were short and spoken as if it was a chore— as if he’d disappear into thin air if he ever spoke for more than five minutes.
she doesn’t hold it to him, he probably never wanted to be married. but the princess is stubborn, always trying to bond with him, always trying to know his hobbies, interests and what makes her husband tick.
heels clack against the floor as the woman makes it a mission to find kento. turning a corner, she slows to a stop as her eyes rest on her husband standing by one of the many lavish balconies in their now shared castle.
her steps turn quiet and measured, taking her place beside him, arm brushing against kento’s.
“marriage, hmm?” her voice is quiet, hesitant, trying to find a way in. his heart is frozen in layers of ice and she knows she’s not enough to thaw it. she’s met with silence, and her heart clenches.
minutes pass by. her bones tighten and grasp onto each other in anxiety, mind racing a hundred miles per minute. she knows she’s like some insect; she’s latched onto him.
“kento, talk to me, please.” she tries again, her voice filled with raw desperation, as if she’s begging. as much as she doesn’t want it, her heart yearns for him, as if he’s the missing piece it’s been missing for as long as she’s been alive.
kento turns and stares down at his wife, expression so carefully fixed to be cold and impassive. “about what? about the fact we’re married? only lovers speak to each other the way you’re begging me to.” he practically sneers.
silence envelopes the two once more. the princess’s eyes are glazed over with unshed tears. nothing more is said, but she yearns for him too much. she clings onto him like how cling wrap grasps onto a bowl, hard to peel off. it’s easy to mold, easy to tie into knots just to satisfy someone. like him.
she loves too much— like a starved man who knows no bounds. he doesn’t love. the only thing on his mind is his duty. and when he finally turns around, his back facing the woman he married, he speaks one final time.
it’s firm, like a decision he’d made long ago, before her. “must i remind you this is.. strictly us fulfilling our duty to our parents and people? nothing more, nothing less.”
he sighs, footsteps receding, leaving his wife alone as the cold air pushes against the princess, as if embracing her.
