On a chilly Thursday afternoon, Wollie Strik, Maa, Baa and guest sheep Lettie went to a coffee house called “‘t Suppierhuysinghe” (who comes up with these names?!) to have a drink and a sandwich. When we got there we were told we could only pay in cash. None of us had any, so we  took a trip to the ATM first. When we returned and sat down, we were told they had only one sandwich left in the entire coffee house. Being very hungry - as we hungry sheep always are - we had to think of another place to fill our rumbling tummies. We decided to go to De Koets, a well-known place among Humanities students and teachers.

Luckily, De Koets did have plenty of food for these hungry sheep. We all ordered a fresh mint tea (Baa’s traditional drink) and took a look at the menu. Guest sheep Lettie ordered a Toasted ham and cheese sandwich (€ 4,50), Maa chose an Italian roll with carpaccio, Parmezan and pesto (€ 8,75), and Baa chose a Waldkorn roll with goat cheese au gratin and honey (€ 7,50).

It wasn’t very busy in De Koets, so we got our drinks and food in no-time. While Lettie and Maa started to eat, Baa was shocked to find a strangely furry olive on her plate. All the sheep closed in on her plate - except for Ovis who attacked Maa’s food while she wasn’t looking - to examine the olive and to see if there were more furry ones. The waitress came and was equally shocked. She told us that mouldy olives were unacceptable and went off to get Baa a new plate, and promised that Baa wouldn’t have to pay for her lunch. This was a very pleasant surprise for Baa and her student budget, and she was happy to overlook the mistake with this generous compensation. Maa was secretly very jealous of Baa at this point and desperately looked for furry food on her own plate. Unfortunately, Maa’s food was all shiny and fresh and there was no mould to be found.

De Koets is well-known for its good food, and I have to say: it really was delicious. Unfortunately, they do make you pay the big bucks for their quality, which is definitely not a plus for the average student. And although the atmosphere is very pleasant, the place isn’t exactly study friendly due to its lack of sockets, small tables and absent WiFi. You could sit in a corner with a good book and enjoy a nice cup of tea, though.

All in all, De Koets was a very nice experience for the four hungry sheep. Although the prices were high (tip: bring a can with mouldy olives!), the food and the service were great. And because De Koets is very close to the faculty, Maa and Baa will definitely come back soon for a drink or bite!

Op een frisse donderdagmiddag begaven Mekker, Blaat en gastschaapje Lettie zich naar het Koffiehuisje (officiële naam: ‘t Suppiershuysinghe - hebben wij ook niet bedacht!) voor wat te drinken en een versnapering. Toen we arriveerden bleken we alleen contact te kunnen betalen, dus ondernamen we de trip naar de pinautomaat en keerden weer terug. Helaas bleek toen dat er in de hele zaak nog maar één broodje te bekennen was. Hongerig gingen we op zoek naar een andere plaats om onze rammelende magen te vullen. We besloten naar De Koets te gaan, om zo evengoed nog een verslag te kunnen schrijven.

De Koets bevind zich vlakbij de faculteit waar Mekker en Blaat lessen volgen en gastschaapje Lettie lessen geeft, en het drietal was er dan ook al enigszins bekend mee. Ze bestelden alledrie een verse muntthee (Blaats traditionele drankje) en bestudeerden de menukaart. Gastschaap Lettie besloot voor een Tosti van ham en kaas (€ 4,50) te gaan, terwijl Mekker een Italiaanse bol met rundercarpaccio, parmezaan en pesto (€ 8,75) bestelde. Blaat koos Gegratineerde geitenkaas met honing op een Waldkornbol (€ 7,50).

Het drinken stond in een mum van tijd op tafel, en ook het eten liet niet lang op zich wachten. Het was dan ook niet erg druk in de zaak. Terwijl Lettie en Mekker zich te goed deden aan hun broodjes, kreeg Blaat de schrik van haar leven: ze had een olijf opgepakt, en die was beschimmeld aan de binnenkant. Ook de tweede olijf had een donzig wit laagje van binnen, en toen de serveester terugkwam schrok zij ook van deze onverwachte ontwikkeling. Ze nam Blaats broodje mee terug en verzekerde haar een nieuwe te laten maken.

Niet lang daarna kwam de serveerster terug met Blaats broodje, en ook met een aangename verrassing: het broodje zou van de rekening gehaald worden. Blaat en haar studentenbudget waren hier erg over te spreken en hadden hier best de schrik van een paar beschimmelde olijven voor over.

Het eten van De Koets staat goed bekend, en ook dit keer maakte het zijn reputatie waar. Helaas betaal je voor de kwaliteit ook wel wat meer dan voor de gemiddelde student verstandig is. Als studeerplek is De Koets niet overmate geschikt: hoewel het vlakbij de faculteit Geesteswetenschappen gevestigd is, hangt er niet bepaald een sfeer waarin je je boeken even op de (niet bijzonder grote) tafel gooit. Ook zijn er weinig stopcontacten aanwezig voor laptops of mobiele telefoons, en is er geen WiFi beschikbaar. Rustig in een hoekje een boek lezen zou wel goed kunnen.

Al met al hebben de schaapjes een positieve ervaring gehad in De Koets. Het eten was erg lekker en de service goed; helaas was alleen de prijs iets minder. Omdat De Koets zo dichtbij de faculteit is zullen Mekker en Blaat hier hoogstwaarschijnlijk nog wel eens terugkomen voor een hapje of een drankje.
