light's inability to be in any way genuine is so fucking fascinating to me and its in a way a more sympathetic element of his character to me. light and L both being autistic is something that is like crucial to me about both of their characters, but even if you dont agree with that, the important part is the way they present themselves.
light has been masking for his entire life while L hasnt masked a day in his life. and i find the way that their individual weirdness comes across bcuz of that rlly interesting. L is weird, very much so, but its his genuine behavior and so you get used to it, for many it becomes endearing, bcuz it feels natural. while light is weird bcuz of how DISINGENIOUS his behavior is. hes trying to act "normal", to play the part of the perfect son and young man, but it comes across as so fake and unsettling bcuz IT IS! it feels weirder than if he would just let himself actually behave freely, but he doesnt even know who he is without this front. or doesnt want to know
i call this a more sympathetic part of his character to me bcuz i do relate to the feeling of constantly being like "am i normal am i coming across as normal." and light obviously grew up in a situation that, as a Not Normal Kid (autistic, gay aroace - just my hcs tho obviously), pressured him to develop this need to mask and force himself to constantly play the part of someone he's not. pressure from society, pressure from his father, etc. obviously it in no way excuses his actions but i find the mindset behind his behavior so fascinating to think about
