And now for something completely different...for me
Swear I'm not Woody Allen and death obsessed or morose or even depressed at the moment, but I've found Death to be a major positive component of my music listening as of late. How ?
Death- "For The Whole World To See" <http://goo.gl/whtA0T> This Salon article on the group should bring you up to speed on this legendary and ground breaking black punk group that never gained the exposure they so deserved. The music evokes a little Rubber City Rebels/Bizarros or maybe a little more power poppy and less scuzzy at times. Sometimes prog elements are incorporated here and there too which is not surprising. The attitude and the speed of the playing is breathtaking given year this was made. Too bad we'll never know what was to come. I can't even dock it a notch for the longish "Let the World Turn" because if they had more studio time they might have tightened things up a bit. It's a time capsule of a band that was ahead of it's time and we're lucky to have this document of the band's only surviving tapes that were stowed away and recently reissued and available online. This is the true lost musical genius of Detroit and not Sugarman. 1974 was the year this was recorded and sat in a closet until very recently.
Grateful Dead- Dick's Picks #29 - Atlanta Fox Theatre 5-17-77. The magical month of May 1977 in the Dead history of phenomenal live shows goes. Hallowed is not overstating how deadicated followers of Jerry would calls this time in their history. And, after listening to everything from Dicks Picks to the holy grail Barton Hall 5-8-77 show at Cornell University I feel baptised by the morning dew. Jerry's in his finest Wah/Flange mode here. Donna and Keith contribute to great effect and the band is as tight as any show from this time which is a peak along with the 69-72 years and Jerry's post Heroin recovery performances.
Death Grips- One of my favorite Rap groups defies categorization for me- Hardcore, Hip Hop, Metal, Electronic, Dance? Yes to all. I can't pick why this group has me enthralled other than to say the attitude and originality of their ethos and DIY punk spirit comes shining through in the lyrics, music , and album art. Best rap group of the last three years? maybe were it not for the Das Racist/Himanshu/AD 51 conglomerate and it's various releases.
Death- (any of their albums , but start with Symbolic if you're curious) This band is not to be confused with the above punk group. This is some serious hardcore Death Metal music. My exposure comes via the effusive love from Bradley and his thoughts on the complexity and beauty of their words and music, and it's there people if you want to put in the effort. Don't believe me ask Bradley.
