Michael McGuirk Statement, Counter-Commencement, Whitney Museum of American Art.
Excerpt:
$5.1 trillion dollars of debt. - Nearly 40 percent of federal student loan borrowers over age 65 are in default.
This ever-growing and aging problem buries working class American families underneath an insurmountable amount of debt that will have an impact for generations.
This debt has created an anchor, to prevent the growth and prosperity affecting the most fundamental ways we live our lives.
The banks do nothing to actively alleviate the problem, but they go out of their way to shake you down when you're at your lowest point and have nothing left.
Does the bank care if want a family? Do they care if I get married? Do they care if you want a home? Do they care about anyone? Do they care about your health?
Does the banker care if life has meaning?
I talk to people every day who are so depressed out their debt. The government isn’t doing enough to relieve the great burden our generation carries. We must fight for ourselves and future generations.
