The big day for my husband's last surgery (hopefully) is next Thursday! We go up for Neal to get all signed in, Thursday is surgery day, Friday he stays so they can make sure there's no issues, Saturday we get to come home. He'll have 4 weeks of healing, then they turn on the battery.

Hi Ozzie. Do you have information on the long term effects of electrical stimulation (with drilling) on the brain through the nervous system to the womb? As in dragonfly programming I guess.

Here’s some information. *I’m not a doctor.*

In deep brain stimulation, electrodes are placed in a specific area of the brain depending on the symptoms being treated. The electrodes are placed on both the left and right sides of the brain through small holes made at the top of the skull. The electrodes are connected by long wires that travel under the skin and down the neck to a battery-powered stimulator under the skin of the chest.

“DBS improved motor and behavioral disorders in all patients and allowed reduction in, or even total interruption of disease-specific medication during pregnancy. With the exception of the spontaneous early abortion of one fetus in a twin pregnancy, all pregnancies were uneventful in terms of obstetric and pediatric management. DBS parameters were adjusted in five patients in order to limit clinical worsening during pregnancy. Implanted material limited breast-feeding in one patient because of local pain at submammal stimulator site and led to local discomfort related to stretching of the cable with increasing belly size in another patient whose stimulator was implanted in the abdominal wall.” Source

Trial and Tremor

Extreme cold or overwhelming fear might make you shiver or tremble. But if those temporary shakes lasted for any significant time, they’d become a debilitating problem. Tremor, the uncontrolled shaking of part of the body, is the most common movement disorder, but treatments are limited by our incomplete understanding of the brain mechanisms behind it. A new study has revealed that Purkinje cells (blue in the mouse cerebellum pictured) are involved. Purkinje cells send regular signals to other areas of the brain, and when these were blocked, tremors in mice stopped. Closer inspection showed that tremors start when the regular signals are modified to send in sporadic bursts. The researchers were able to reduce tremor by targeting the cerebellum with deep brain stimulation – a treatment sometimes used on other areas of the brain – and trigger tremors by altering these cells’ behaviour. This deeper understanding may help get tremor under control.
