Written because while I adored Badhaai Do, I really was not a fan of the scene where Shardul slaps Kabir. Badhaai Do fix-it ficlet

Written because while I adored Badhaai Do, I really was not a fan of the scene where Shardul slaps Kabir. It’s almost ridiculous how terrified Shardul is, almost more so than when Papa was martyred or the numerous times when he has come close to being outed. But he’s sensed Kabir drifting further and further away, ever since their honeymoon, and he’d specifically taken time off for this get-away and paid a pretty penny for this hotel. And Kabir is listening with only half an ear and browsing on his phone, and Shardul knows, Shardul knows what’s happening in his gut, and he can hear the cluster of truths buzzing in his ears – not good enough, not manly enough, not a good son, not a good husband, not a good police officer, not a good man – and he doesn’t need this truth to be true as well.

So he corners Kabir before he can easily swing his backpack over his shoulder and asks him what’s going on, if there’s anything wrong, and Kabir mouths his well-worn excuse about the deadline coming up, and the buzzing becomes a cacophony, and Shardul asks if he can see his phone. Of course it’s the wrong thing to come out of his mouth, of course there’s no going back once one person has snooped through the other’s phone, but Shardul needs to know, he needs to confirm that there’s nothing wrong. Kabir tries to duck around him but Shardul didn’t almost become Mr. India for nothing, and he agilely weaves through Kabir’s frantic movements, because he’s not leaving until he has his answers, and it’s not until Shardul’s shouted and his ears are ringing in the sudden silence that he realizes. Realizes that he’s cornered him by the mirror, Shardul’s hands on either side of his head against the wall, that Kabir seems so small when boxed in by his muscular arms and frame, and that there’s fear in Kabir’s eyes.

And then he thinks of Sumi, demanding where can people go when the policemen become stalkers. Of gay couples in the park, looking up at him, their bodies hunched with terror. Of Naaznin once saying that abuse doesn’t need to be physical, that a man using his larger size to intimidate his girlfriend – or boyfriend – is enough.

He backs away immediately, folds himself in, tries to keep his body language nonthreatening, but it’s too late, Kabir is slipping away and out of the room before Shardul can blink and he thinks of himself, ten years ago, growing bored and frustrated with being Dheeraj’s dirty little secret and his boy toy, how he had slunk away rather than having the difficult conversation.

And even Dheeraj had never tried to intimidate him as he had just done.

Disgust at himself fills him, but drowning out the cacophony is suddenly a cold voice – maybe it’s his father’s – reminding him that wallowing does nothing, that only apology and action can make up for misdeeds.

“Kabir – Kabir, come back! I shouldn’t have done that, I didn’t mean to frighten you – come back, we’ll talk it over.”

But Kabir has left, and Shardul is alone again, standing in the corridor of a five-star hotel in nothing but his underwear.
