The Challenges of Defining Artists and Art Movements in Contemporary Art
Defining Art
Sometimes when a person views a piece, installation, performance, etc. they do not interpret it as art. The things that are heard most commonly are "A child could have done/draw/painted this." or in the case of photography, "This is just a snapshot, I could have done that with my phone." Is this just from a lack of knowledge of the arts and art history or do we truly need to look more carefully? If just one person views something as art does that make it art? Looking past formal elements such as line, shape, color, etc. How can someone define a work as art? Feel free to discuss and leave any ideas in the comments.
